Because its a small cute drop top that's popular with women too. And even though it is super popular with enthusiasts, enthusiasts still make up the minority of Miata owners. Really, the Miatas real popularity with enthusiasts didn't get in full swing until Spec Miata showed up.

Not at all. Miata has always been an immensely popular car for autoX, and in Showroom stock's heyday was one of the most popular cars to race. (much like current showroom stock)
Spec Miata is a result of enthusiasts obsession with the car, not the cause of it.
I believe it was EVO or one of the other european motorsports enthusiasts magazines declared the Miata the top sportscar of the 90s. Over FDRX7, 300ZTT, Supra, etc.
I thought the Miata was the Official mid-life crisis car.
