Driving for Uber?

A while ago I had checked out uber and lyft, but they weren't in the area. Uber is now in Harrisonburg/Cville, and I signed up for grins. I'm curious if anyone has driven for a ride share, what could I expect on the passenger front? A lot of sketchy requests to stop by the liquor store on the way to Dollar General?

Do drivers get 1099's or something at the end of the year? It looks like it'll take a week or so for the background checks to come in before I can log into the app.

You are basically a contractor with Uber. So, you don't technically get benefits and shit. You can choose your passengers. You can rate your passengers. You have the right to kick people out. Other than that I don't know too much about it.

I'm curious how much the fares are for "UberBlack" or whatever the ultra-premium one is, and how much people up in this area use them. I'm curious, mostly as a thought exercise, if you could make a decent amount of money by buying the cheapest and most reliable luxo-barge (like an older Lexus LS Hybrid or something) that qualifies for UberBlack and then shuttling traveling businessmen from IAD into the city and back. I see little fleets of Uber drivers hanging around near my office building because they aren't allowed to sit around on Airport property, but it only takes a couple minutes to get over there from my street.

there's an age limit on the car you can have. you can make more if you're willing to work nights/weekends.

from what i understand its not at all a bad way to make money but you've got to hustle and know when/where to plant yourself at locations so that you're ready for a fare and can get decent ratings which equal more calls and business. so, you need to budget time to basically just sit around and wait vs. just taking off from your driveway when you want. i assume hauling drunk people around would also be an awesome way to become familiar with the best brands of disposable gloves and using carpet shampoo.

i think anything that does great in town (hybrid) would be the way to go considering how fast fuel mileage can eat into your profits, and obviously appliance status for the reliability and cheap buy-in

I take lots of Ubers and I was talking to an Uber driver here that said that once you go "on the clock" and you get a request for pickup you have to accept it. If you don't, after 3 times they take away your ability to drive for them or something. I would read all the fine print just so you know what you are getting into.

Yeah, there's no chance of that. My thought was to clock in with uber as I'm out doing errands at lunch and see if I can catch anything along the way.

Mostly I'm just a fan of anything that shakes up an established model, especially one that is heavily regulated by a government, so I'm curious to learn the inner workings.

driver account still hasn't been activated yet, but got a new registration in the mail from the DMV yesterday saying the car has been registered with a transportation network company (TNC) and I now have MM colored stickers on my plate. I didn't have a clue uber would do that on my behalf and it wasn't in their signup process/required docs anywhere that I noticed. I'm sure it's easier if they can do it with out having the driver go to the dmv, cause i would have been out at that point, but wondering if there's any other considerations I need to look at now that the car is a registered TNC.
