Snow sports

I'm going to be at Snowshoe the weekend of MLK Jr. Day. Anyone going to be around?

Also got another trip up there planned for March 6-9 (some free OAR concert going on or something).

I usually go with a crew of people, so I think our house is already booked at least for the first one.

I rented gear last year. I am looking to buy boots and bindings this year - Anyone got recommendations for good stuff on sale or just good stuff? I think I definitely want something that ratchets down from the top. I didn't like the shit I rented last year that had the click-in from the back.

Shop craigslist. Boots/binding/snowboards are cheap as dirt. I would personally buy a board/skis/bindings off craigslist and then get new boots.

If you ski, my roommate has like 7 sets I can see if he would be interested in selling a set.

I actually have a burton board that I am borrowing this year, but I definitely want to buy boots. Maybe I should look for bindings off craigslist - didn't really think about that. Are the bindings pretty much universal as far as fitting to the board, and working with the boots?

I actually heard about a service that lets you "lease" ski equipment. One of our clients uses it for her kids because they outgrow equipment so fast. You may want to look into that each season because that stuff isn't cheap! I've still got the original first gen K2 Clickers along with an old Rossi board that is still legit. I have been meaning to go but haven't hit the slopes since I was at JMU

Snow sports you say? Just in case any of you are thinking of coming out to Colorado I'm currently working at WoodWard at Copper Mountain. We've got a good crew of recent JMU alumni out here and if you play your cards right you may just find yourself a couch, or floor, or a warm bus stop in nearby Frisco. Feel free to holler if you're thinking of coming out.

Hrmm, no colorado plans this year. I'm still way too noobish to think about that.

Update on equipment, a buddy of mine basically gave me his burton board boots binding that was from like 3 years ago and in awesome shape. I think I am going to buy a helmet this year though, so thats last on the list.

Went ahead and booked the place for March. 7BR house going with about 10-12 people. Should be a good time. Wouldn't mind going to liberty or somewhere before then though, if anyone's thinking about a trip.

When are we going to hit Massanutten one weekend? I've been going a bunch this year so I'm pretty much always up there on Sundays anyway.

You might find that going out West is really rewarding as a noob. The snow is much higher quality and far more forgiving when you fall. If you're getting down green slopes with no problem you could have fun out West.

Only caveat is that the snow tends to be a lot deeper and powdery so you have to adjust to keeping your nose up. When you fall in deep powder it doesn't hurt (usually) but it's a lot harder to get up.

Hrmm I guess that's a good point. When I was at snowshoe last week we got some good snow one night, and one thing I have noticed that makes me unstable is hitting different types of snow one after the other. I was doing all the silvercreek blue squares good enough but the last day when there was some ice patches with some soft snow with some packed powder, it made the tail of the snowboard get wobbly it seemed and that was an easy way for me to get out of control.

Doing a Sun morning trip this weekend up to Ski Liberty if anyone's interested. Plan is to be there when they open the lifts, 8 am, get a 4 hour pass, so that the NoVA folks are back home in plenty of time for the game. I'll be leaving Haymarket around 6:30 unless I'm meeting others for them to ride with.
