So I couldn't really find a movie review thread so I'm just gonna post this here.
Did anyone watch The Great Gatsby? Planning on watching it? Don't know if you want to watch it? Either way, this is what I thought about it, it would be cool to hear what others think:
Okay so The Great Gatsby really wasn't that great at all. Too much going on with the visuals, the CGI was ridiculously obvious and overwhelming. Although the music sounded good it didn't really fit imo. I mean its a cool twist but when you stick that close to the book and then throw in this modern music, its just awkward. Did they really have to get Jay-Z to put all that together? Anyways... I felt like some parts were literally being read to me from the book through a movie screen and the reading wasn't that great. It was just this fast line-by-line rambling rather than a masterfully articulated conversation that would have given us the same information necessary to understand the story. I really felt like I was just watching someone's imagination as they read the book, which for me, is poor directing/producing. After about halfway through the movie, when the story started to finally pick up, I was more sucked in and I began to ignore all the little bits that irked the shit out of me and then the movie started to seem better. It was definitely emotional in the latter end and we started to see the actors hone their characters qualities/traits much better.
As for the acting, Leo Dicap was awkward in the beginning to me and I hated the way he said "old sport". I would not have chosen Carrie Mulligan for Daisy. Toby Maguire was actually spot on for Nick Carraway. Speaking of Nick... Did anyone else feel like Nick was just waaayy to homo-erotic about Gatsby? I know Nick thought highly of Gatsby but god damn! I felt like they were about to start humping in the middle of the movie or some shit. I would say all the other actors fit their characters well. Oh yeah, what was up with all their voices? Once again.. feeling like i'm watching someone's imagination.
All in all it was just okay. The story is the story, if you've read the book, you've seen the movie. No variant there, so there's nothing to really say about that. The music was good but not fitting, the visual gave me a headache, acting was weird at parts, some scenes were spot on to how I imagined it from the book and it took half the movie before I began to appreciate anything about the movie. Nothing exceptional or anything to rant/rave about.
Hmmmm, I give it a 3.62/5 :|
Anyone else have any thoughts about it?
