When I put the new engine in I did not use antifreeze. It gets pretty cold 'round these parts. What do you people with no AF in your race cars do for the winter? Drain it is the easy answer, but because not a race car, I'd like to drive it every once in a while in the winter.

I don't want to run it on the track and trying to avoid adding and removing every winter / spring. I know a lot of people run it in their HPDE cars but I don't want to be the one that spills it and wipes people out and ruins the entire session.

Engine block heater? If it were me I would just do the drain and fill. You can buy a flush kit that hooks to a heater line and makes getting the antifreeze out a lot easier.

An engine block heater would work but it would have to be on all winter. If water is in there and it freezes it may crack the block.

i'd put in some antifreeze too (I bet most racecars go the drain & refill route since they don't get driven). Maybe just not a full 50/50 mix so cleanup isn't as bad if there's spillage? Running a block heater all winter sounds like teh suck...
Also, is it in an attached garage? Maybe it doesn't get as cold in there as you think?
Put in some anti-freeze. Drain. Replace with water.

As much as it sucks, it's still better than pulling out a busted engine. My vote goes to the antifreeze.

I think that gets you down to 0 deg or somewhere in that range. That being said, it's probably still pretty darn slippery if I got it on a track... :oops:

Garage is sort of attached, 3.5 exposed walls with no insulation. The roof heat helps, but I've definitely had water bottles and such freeze in there.
Looks like I'll just do the light mixture. And of course, just not dump it.

The only thing that stops a bad guy with a van is a good guy with a van
drain and fill with some anti-freeze. Not worth chancing. Remember to drive it around for just a few minutes after filling up with some anti-freeze so it mixes properly and so you dont have sections of the engine with just pure water.
