GTI APR Tuning? - Ken - 02-25-2012
Hey, so my brother is looking into getting his '10 GTI tuned by and APR approved shop. Have any of you had any experience with them before? Is this the preferred route of going about getting an ECU flash? He's pretty much just looking for a little more power and maybe the occasional autox.

APR is a household name with VAG tuning, they've been building software for these cars since back in the 1.8T days. as long as the tuner knows how to load a map onto the car it should be fine and run nicely.

Not sure how it works, hence my question. i know with my car I can just do a COBB AP i don't believe that's an option for a VW. I guess my question is, is this the equivalent to the COBB AP for a VW?

APR flashes are through their dealer network, or you can send them your ECU I think. Same with GIAC.

its just a flash as far as i know. just a plug n play "canned" generic map.
dyno time on an otherwise stock car sounds like kind of a waste.

Okay, that's what i thought it was. Just wanted to make sure it wasn't a full Dyno tune since, as you guys mentioned, that's pointless for his car.
I don't trust him loading his own maps. From what i read the APR tune is controlled through the cruise control.

know it's probably after the fact, but i had an ARP tune done to my s4, came with 4 different maps for stock and different octane ratings and yeah, you can switch between maps by holding down the cruise control stick for X seconds and it'll flash on the dash to tell you what map you're in.
it's pretty good for an initial setup, and wakes up the car a bit.
also liked it since it didn't require them to put a chip on the ecu, it's all software based, lets you clear cel's and apparently is encrypted so it won't show up on a dealer scan for warranty violations. (although i'm sure they all know to push the cruise control)
