Ideas for Campus Meetings - Kaan - 02-17-2012 I popped in to the meeting on Wednesday and it was almost over. I think I was 15 minutes late. Times change, but usually we wouldnt have ever started the meeting yet lol. Anyway I figured I would put together some ideas for the officers AND students (maybe some alumni) for possible presentations. If the current students dont want to hear people talk about crap, so be it its just an idea for you guys (feel free to tell me if its a bad idea). They may require research (or should) and you could also steal some ideas if you sat in on the HPDE class room sessions. Ideas: -HP vs. TQ as it applies to street/autox/track/drag -Basic engine upgrades and the slippery slope (when should I upgrade my valve train? How does compression effect static hp/tq) -The Friction Circle can be simplified visually - Offset and Backspacing how do I make these tires and wheels fit -How to use X tool -Cam profiles and what they mean (and why you cant talk in stages) -How to read the side wall of a tire -What is camber/toe/caster and how does lowering my car change these Re: Ideas for Campus Meetings - Jake - 02-17-2012 I like these ideas. Offset/backspacing is something that I never ever "learned" and I still don't know too well. Having someone experienced on that do a little session would be so helpful. Also, it sounds basic, but explaining oversteer versus understeer, how both happen and how you can change your car's setup to affect those. Having someone experienced on that do a little session would be so helpful. I'm going to sound like the old guy... but since you never learned it maybe you'd like to research it and do it? I can random wheels, a good flat edge, etc... and we can take supporting pictures.
Re: Ideas for Campus Meetings - Goodspeed - 02-17-2012 Basic physics Safe driving techniques for the street Different tools, what they do, how to use them and what you should buy (on a college kids budget, basic stuff) How to read a shop manual Basic car work know how - knowing tq specs, greases, metric/standard terminology and nut/bolt specs Why basic maintenance is important - how oils, plugs, etc work and why they degrade How to auto-x (basically Rex's guide verbally and more) etc. etc. I always enjoyed the car profile presentations. Someone pick a car and talk about its history, design, achievements, etc. Or important people in the car/motorsport world as well? Re: Ideas for Campus Meetings - JPolen01 - 02-17-2012 Jake Wrote:I like these ideas.I'd be interested in throwing something together with you Jake. Offsets are really fairly simple once you get the hang of it. Knowing how much you can lower your car and the offset needed to get the fenders to meet the lip of the wheel is a whole other story though. Ask me how I know;-) Sent from my DROIDX using Tapatalk Re: Ideas for Campus Meetings - ScottyB - 02-17-2012 - manual transmission techniques and what you can practice on the street - tire pressures for the street and track, and why - octane ratings and what they mean - cornering lines and how to properly apex in all drivetrain configurations - whats a camber curve and how it affects your ability to stay out of the wall Re: Ideas for Campus Meetings - Goodspeed - 02-17-2012 Oh yeah, how to spend your money when it relates to cars  I feel like society as a whole could use this (and more) - New vs. used car buying - how to buy a used car, what to look for, warning signs - inspecting a possible purchase - Spending $$$ wisely on aftermarket purchases (lowering springs and heavy wheels, or new tires and an alignment?) - No, do not buy that ebay turbo kit etc. Re: Ideas for Campus Meetings - ScottyB - 02-17-2012 ^^ not bad. that's good info that nobody really think about until its time to actually do it. Re: Ideas for Campus Meetings - Cody - 02-19-2012 Quote:I popped in to the meeting on Wednesday and it was almost over. I think I was 15 minutes late. Dayyumm cut us some slack, it was a good 30 minutes for sure  The floor is always open for people to bring up or share w/e. I'd love to see more members or even visiting alumni carrying on some good discussions. I'm just curious what the current students want to see?? I'll definitely put some time into digging up some interesting stuff. We had Dr. Thomas in once to discuss the new G-Force track (which was a big hit) and if anyone wants to come in let me know and we can plan some cool stuff! I'm diggin the ideas so far. Re: Ideas for Campus Meetings - TorinoCobra070 - 02-21-2012 Jake Wrote:I like these ideas. Somebody let me know when this session is going down haha Just a few more titles / subjects - lowering a car vs. lowering it the right way (aka please dont cut your factory springs) - modding your car on a budget (could go along with the don't waste your money one) - how to detail yo whip the right way Re: Ideas for Campus Meetings - ScottyB - 02-22-2012 just thought of another one: - tips you can use for if/when you get pulled over: what to have ready, things to say, where to put your hands, how to answer questions and ways to help put the officer at ease. i know Kaan had to fight a speeding ticket and actually used some math in his court appearance to prove the ticket wrong. Re: Ideas for Campus Meetings - Kaan - 02-22-2012 ScottyB Wrote:just thought of another one: i cant hand out my secrets damn you! Re: Ideas for Campus Meetings - Jeff - 02-25-2012 Rex and I are working on a Electrical 101 sorta thing...more to come. |
