Should i trade? - ispoonwithmugen - 09-28-2011

I can not stand the tranny on my 02 wrx.. and i found this.. it needs a clutch and some tlc but thats not too bad.

<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2210540&highlight=2004">http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2210540&highlight=2004</a><!-- m -->

if anyone doesnt know what my car is... i have a members ride thread:

<!-- l --><a class="postlink-local" href="http://www.mmsports.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=10135">viewtopic.php?f=14&t=10135</a><!-- l -->

.. The clutch is the only main thing im worried about (obviously) and the fact that it was last tuned in 06 is a while too. Does anyone have knowledge on changing clutches on subaru's/ how hard is it?

Re: Should i trade? - Kaan - 09-28-2011

tranny swap is my vote... not a car swap.

Re: Should i trade? - Mike - 09-28-2011

there are a number of items in that listing that would keep me from touching that car with a ten foot pole. run away.

Re: Should i trade? - ispoonwithmugen - 09-28-2011

but there are some decent parts on there also... and the tranny swap would be 3500 in parts alone and that would suck

Re: Should i trade? - .RJ - 09-28-2011

Whats wrong with the trans?

V7/V8 six speed swap. If you're going to swap trans, might as well get the ballin rear diff and extra cog.

there is nothing per say wrong with it.. its just a notorious shitty bugeye tranny
it pops out of reverse after 4 seconds or so. and it wont go in first unless im at a complete stop

Mine won't either, and neither will dozens of other cars. I never understood why this is such a big deal.

Thats normal for just about every AWD car ive ever driven, EVO/WRX/STI/GSX. Hell even FWD and RWD cars. You probably dont want to shift in to 1st while moving anyway...

Also is the whole "Glass tranny" a proven thing or internet lore, or is it glass cause it cant hold 400WHP?

Re: Should i trade? - WRXtranceformed - 09-28-2011

Yeah I couldn't shift into first while moving for my WRX or my STi. You're fine....if it aint broke don't fix it imo.

Re: Should i trade? - Apoc - 09-28-2011

Holy crap. An official generation gap on MM.

Re: Should i trade? - Jake - 09-28-2011

I can't shift into first unless I'm going about 1.5mph in either car. Second is fine if I'm rolling and need to continue doing so.

From a financial standpoint, it makes way more sense to keep the car you have now and fix anything it needs. You know the good and bad of the blue car, have likely done a decent amount of upkeep/maintenance on it, and would be throwing that all away to buy something entirely unknown. I'd keep the blue one and drive it until something catastrophic happens, or you get bored and sell it for an entirely different car.

Re: Should i trade? - Kaan - 09-28-2011

its my understanding they are fine until you start turning up the power and do a TON of big time launches.

but the lock out is normal and not much is going to change that.

Then dont "fix" it? Seriously...

i have the same transmission in my RS. it is a bit shitty, but honestly before you sell the entire car because of the way it shifts (at only 52k miles), there are some things you can try that i think helped mine alot over the past 5 years i've owned it. its still not an S2000 shifter or anything, but it does fine for 99% of what i ask of it.

- short shifter. buy a kartboy with the upgraded bushings. if you don't like it, you can sell it for nearly the same that you bought it since people are always after them. there are many cars that don't benefit from a SS, it only serves to make the synchro action worse and kills the nice shift gating. but the WRX isn't one of those cars, it really needs it IMO.

- subaru Extra-S gear lube. these trannys, for whatever reason, are apparently sensitive to gearbox fluid and whatever friction modifiers that are in it. mine was a box of rocks on stock fluid. now it shifts pretty damn well and only gets better the hotter it gets. Extra-S is OEM so its compatibility with the tranny is a known quantity. Some people have tried other types with decent results. Don't do the "uncle scotty's cocktail" on NASTIOC, its a hodge-podge.

- first gear is always going to be a pain in the ass. i think it's single cone synchro on first and it just isn't enough to slam down into when you're moving fast. that said, the only reason you should be in first when you're moving is in an autocross. my advice - learn to double clutch downshift and just forget about trying to make first gear behave. doing that, i can dump it into first from as high as 15-20 mph. never need to unless i'm auto-x'ing, and even then only rarely.

as for that car for sale....aside from some nice engine mods its not that impressive. probably rebuilt the tranny because he blew it up raw-dogging on it. those tein struts are a step down from your H&R's i think. who knows what the condition of the engine is after being beat on. price is too high.

This.

I have a WRX too and it won't shift into first while moving unless I rev match. I usually double-clutch into first. I used to do the same with my Integra.

I'll also be trying the tranny fluid switch.

The way I see it, the transmission is just one of the compromises you sign up for when you buy a Subaru. Like Scotty said, it's never going to feel like a S2000, but it's not the worst thing in the world. I'm certainly fine with that compromise considering the upside of the WRX.

Re: Should i trade? - ScottyB - 09-29-2011

for posterity, now that i think about it, my honda never let me shift into first while moving and my audi never let me shift into first while moving either.

the 6 speed is a waste unless you have so much power you're shattering the gears in the 5 speed. its expensive, heavier, and you'll need to buy a DCCD controller for it. your money can definitely go to better things first.

Re: Should i trade? - Kaan - 09-29-2011

<3 my 300k mile honda trans will let me shift into first while moving. it didnt used to though!
