You can take the course which is impossible to get into except 6 months in advance or.....
can anyone outline each way?

AFAIK there's no rule against just going to the DMV and taking the tests. There should be two, a paper test and a road test (IIRC).
I've always thought of the course as something that gets you a nice discount on your insurance, and teaches you essential skills. Not necesarily a license must. You'd learn a ton of useful stuff there, though. Getting on the road on a bike isn't something you want to rush, either. The thought of it is terrific, but the risks can be very, very high when you're out there. In addition to the simple skillset you need to ride, you have to interact with traffic in a whole different way... etc. etc. blah blah, you've heard this all before

Take the class in Harrisonburg, or, come to Charlottesville, or go somewhere besides NOVA. I signed up for the MSF course a month ago, and I'm doing it this weekend - not a problem to get in at all.

You can get your permit(computer DMV) at any time and do not need it for the MSF. The MSF is $90 and is fri night, sat, and sun. Completion of the MSF will waive you from the skills portion that the DMV typically conducts. If you complete the MSF w/out the permit then you go to the DMV and take the computer test. The MSF certification card combined with completion of the computer test will get you your license. I would wait on a bike until all of this is completed.

insurance on bikes is cheap, i really wouldn't worry about it.

$560 a year, i got comprehensive though, comes out to $60 a month. I got scared after my good friend got in a accident so I decided on the better coverage. At the time I had a clean record besides a "tint" ticket" had been driving for years, and it is on a 500cc bike, obviously.

I know this is a late response but if you plan to be take the NoVa MSF class you should call the enrolling office every wednesday to check of any availabilities or student cancellations. I did this and was able to take the class 2 days later.

Just an FYI, the Virginia and Metropolitan area type classes are full until the cows come home... and most stop running in 2 weeks, anyways.
However, the West Virginia Motorcycle Safety Program ( <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.wv-msp.org/index.html">http://www.wv-msp.org/index.html</a><!-- m --> ) run by the MSF still has 7 slots open for THIS weekend, 5 for next weekend, and 10 for the weekend after that.
I'm signed up for this weekend.
