What is your car buying future? - G.Irish - 07-21-2011

The last couple of months I've kinda been grappling with whether I should switch up my vehicle lineup, and it got me to thinking about what I wanna be doing 2-5 years down the line. In the short term I may need to downgrade so I can buy a house but after that I'm thinking my next sports car will be one of the following:

Cayman S: Relatively light, mid-engined rear wheel drive, good power
Toyobaru: Cheap, relatively light, RWD, can swap a WRX engine in
M3 sedan: Fast, practical, can still be a family car
Next gen WRX: ???
360: In a few years they'll be a bit cheaper and I'll be making more money, why not? Other than the maintenance and the possibility of it catching on fire...
996/997 GT3: Again they'll be cheaper in the future, less flammable than the Ferrari

What's on your mind for the medium term future?

Re: What is your car buying future? - Mike - 07-21-2011

RS4 Wagon. I'd like kids in the not too distant future. Budget/smart decision would be Jetta Wagon Tongue

Re: What is your car buying future? - Ryan T - 07-21-2011

I'm somewhat in the same boat Gerald. I sold the Corvette in order to buy a house and help with our wedding and in 2 or 3 years I'll be looking to get back into the sports car game. I will probably keep my Silverado and after Samantha's car is paid off we'll look into either a C6 Corvette or a 00-03 or so 911 Carrera Convertible. I'd love to get back into another Convertible and by then either should be able to be had at $20k with decent miles.

Re: What is your car buying future? - Ken - 07-22-2011

Next gen WRX is allegedly going to be a two door with 300+hp, which i guess begs the question, what the hell is the STI going to be like?

Re: What is your car buying future? - Apoc - 07-22-2011

Mike Wrote:RS4 Wagon. We might want kids at some point. More budget/smart decision would be S4 wagon or a Volvo wagon. Tongue

+1

We are going to try and move when the wife is done with grad school in 2 years. When we do, we want to move into a city and go down to one car. It is most likely to be a bitchin' wagon of some sort.

I'll probably trade the 848 for some sort of BMW sport tourer as well.

Re: What is your car buying future? - Steve85 - 07-22-2011

I'd like to replace the Vette with a four seater to get more use of the fun car
-muscle car with modern running gear. Not an uber-done pro tourer (well if money allows why not), but a lot like Jeff has done with the Challenger.
-still very desirous of the 80's 911
-308 - 348 "what? no back seats, oh well, maybe next car" A more budget friendly entry to F-car.

DD - AWD, Wagon, good MPG. Hoping for Audi TDIs to be at good prices. With wanting to do family trips for skiing, camping (canoes/kayaks/bikes) and wanting to coach sports (lots-o-gear) I'm really liking the combo of good mpgs and utility from a wagon. Of course if someone finally wakes up and puts a TDI in a minivan, I'll consider that. If you're going to give up on life, you might as well have dual sliding doors.

Re: What is your car buying future? - WRXtranceformed - 07-22-2011

C6 Z06 has always been in the cards since I sold the STi. My responsible side has really kicked in within the past 2 years though and I have been putting as much money as I can into investments / savings. My brother just became a financial advisor for ING up in Reston so they put together a killer plan for me....but it takes money to make money and that cash has to go away and sit for a while instead of being used for instant gratification. Which is a good thing.

My TLS is paid off in about a year, so I might consider picking up a Vette at that point, but having no car payment would be really awesome and truthfully I just really don't NEED another project car right now. This Acura is one of the only cars that I've really enjoyed for more than a year so I'll probably run it until the wheels fall off or it becomes too expensive to maintain.

So in summary:

Project / Weekend Car - A project car would be awesome but I think a part of my desire to tune cars died during the long, painful STi build / process. I loved that car but I was pretty detached when I sold it to Travis. I will *at some point* have a h/c/i/nitrous? C6 convertible or C6 Z06 but I want to save as much money as I can now while I don't have a family and the added expenses associated with them.

Daily Driver - Going to beat this car into the ground since it has *knock on wood* been very reliable and serves its purpose well. I never see myself owning a German car, so the next ride when this thing dies will be whatever Lexus or Infiniti has to offer at the time (IS-class / G37 or M-class)

Re: What is your car buying future? - Jake - 07-22-2011

I'll probably keep the Miata around. It's cheap enough to run that keeping vs. selling is a no-brainer, even if I move to a faster track car down the line.

For DD/street use, I'll probably sell the E34 (which will have north of 200k by then) and move to something a bit newer. I hesitate to take on a payment but I would, if it got me in the right car. I'd rock an E39 540/6 or M5, although they aren't the best for "ease of working-on"... would love a fast wagon (bright blue RS4? Giggity) or maybe I'll downsize from the E34 and get a two-door coupe of some sort.

My car-buying process is about as scattered as a game of 52-card pick-up.

Re: What is your car buying future? - SlimKlim - 07-22-2011

Replace Miata with S2000, E36 or some other track car with more horsepowers.

Find something nice to drive around every day, but I'm not sure what that will be, possibly:

E28 BMW 5er: If I went this route it would have to be perfect, lowish mileage, perfect body and interior and a well functioning AC
E39 5er
Scooby Legacy GT
E38 7 series with a manual tranny swap
E46 ZHP

Right now the M3 is functioning as my DD and my fun to drive street toy, I talk about replacing it, but when it comes down to it, I just don't know if I ever could. It was my dream car and I bought it when I was 18. Sooooo maybe I'd keep it and over the years slowly restore it back to it's original glory. And then boost it.

If I puss out and replace it, or If I ever have the means to have a track car, a DD, a spot for the M3 to sit around, AND another toy:

997 911S, 993 9114S (Winter funs?), E92 M3, Ferrari 355 (probably not), Z4 M coupe in alpine white.

EDIT: OH and another bike. I really miss having a bike, but I've decided I'm not even going to think about purchasing another one until I can drop the cash for one that doesn't need an engine, or anything but oil changes and tires for that matter, for one without batting an eyelid, and I have space to keep it, and the fact that its really only nice enough to ride a bike 20% of the year. (unless you're as badass as Kaan)

Thinking CBR 600, SV650, Duc 848 or Duc Monster, maybe a VFR.

Re: What is your car buying future? - .RJ - 07-22-2011

I'm itching for something fun to drive.... miata, s2000, some kind of honda, another GTi, RX8? I'm all over the place.

I'll probably end up buying another moto once I sell the CB750, $4-5k buys a lot of fun. Sure its impractical but I have a truck for practicality and I cant park a car on my back patio.

Reading this thread, it seems like everyone's choices are relative to their age... except G, who is apparently having a mid-life crisis.

Truths. If you asked me this question 3-4 years ago my answer would have been a lot different.

Re: What is your car buying future? - V1GiLaNtE - 07-22-2011

2-3 Years.. Hmmmm

Probably keep XJ.. Maybe make it a suitable trail rig.. Who knows

Realistic DD:
STI/Scoobi WRX/Leggy GT Wagon( High on my list)
Maybe another Audi/VW(RS4 Wagon,A4 wagon,STRETCCCCHHHHH. Low Mileage W8 6spd Passat Wagon.. Sorry still have a soft spot for that car... I'm still not excited about anything German due to past pleasure of working on and buy parts for..

Realisitcaly don't see myself buying a sedan (except STI) EVER.. I like wagons waaayyy too much.. Grocery getters are BA

Case in point:

W8
( Would definitely buy another white one if I could find it..)

B5 S4 Avant
[Image: eurp_0909_01+2001_audi_s4_avant+front_left.jpg]

And pretty much an alpine white WRX waggy.. I have a thing for the whole "stormtrooper" Look..

Re: What is your car buying future? - NTIman - 07-22-2011

As I am working on my education (again), I will be keeping the Corolla as long as I can.

However, if things go right, I would like to buy with the Toyobaru, a WRX (or just regular impreza :dunno: ), or a Mustang. But for right now, I simply don't have the money for anything other than what I have although I am frustrated that I drive such a boring car. On the other hand, 40 mpg is pretty awesome, and it'll be paid off in a little over a year.

I would literally fly anywhere in the country for an S4 Avante, if I thought for a second it wouldn't be a constant drain on my wallet and patience.

Re: What is your car buying future? - Ken - 07-22-2011

My car right now is leased, but i plan on purchasing it at the end of the lease. It currently is valued at $23,500 by KBB and i only have under a year left on the lease and the buy-out is like 14ish, seems like a deal to me.

Ideally i'd like to get it up to about 300ish WHP, which should be achievable by just adding exhaust, fixing my intake, and a tune. Other than that i'm not really sure, i'd like to pick up a pick-up to be honest, i always find myself needing the ability to just throw shit in the back.

What happened to the 3000GT? I liked that idea

Oooooohhh Yea.... Especially if it's the camshafts/timing chain.. I've heard that alone is worth sending the thing off a cliff in flames... :vomit:

Yup.. and then I remember spending money on a NA V6 in the dub.. But then again my financial outlook will be at least a little different in 2-3 years so it's still always a irresponsible choice to fly to WA and buy one?

^ THIS x11nty billion.. I'm actually lusting over apoc's 848 evo in that gorgeous pearl white.. Or find a R1 Raven in the white... ABOSOLUTELY DROOOLLLL
