Internship Advice for NOVA - V1GiLaNtE - 04-15-2011 So it's that time of the year where you apply for internships. Got offered a intern job with DISYS in Mclean today after an interview last week.. Any of you alums get an internship that wasn't anywhere near your hometown and what did you do about housing? I'm from Richmond and a 2 hour commute is not promising.. hock:
Re: Internship Advice for NOVA - .RJ - 04-15-2011 Take it. You have a month to a place to live on craigslist.... Re: Internship Advice for NOVA - Apoc - 04-15-2011 .RJ Wrote:Take it. One of my friends lived at Mason I think it was for the summer while he had an internship up in Nova Re: Internship Advice for NOVA - V1GiLaNtE - 04-16-2011 ^ I read up on that.. I'm trying to test the water on my options.. I'm waiting to hear back from Dominion power too.. That's in Richmond and would be so much more convenient.. Re: Internship Advice for NOVA - JustinG - 04-16-2011 Good luck with Dominion, hopefully that comes through dad has been with them for over 30 years, great company to work for! Re: Internship Advice for NOVA - .RJ - 04-16-2011 You dont want to commute from Mason to Mclean. I dont know anything about your offer in richmond, but having experience and making contacts up here will be worth quite a bit after graduation. Re: Internship Advice for NOVA - Evan - 04-18-2011 an internship / summer job on the career path that you would like to enter makes a big difference for getting the job you want after graduation Re: Internship Advice for NOVA - HAULN-SS - 04-18-2011 It is a paid internship right? If not, I wouldnt bother. If not, I wouldnt bother. did you run into stupid this weekend? in the long run... something relevant - money > something irrelevant + money (internship = chump change anyway) Re: Internship Advice for NOVA - HAULN-SS - 04-18-2011 Im saying I wouldnt move to try to find a place for a free internship. No one does that anymore. There are a lot of paid internships out there. Also, to be relevant on the topic, my company sent out an email last week asking employees to host summer interns. Maybe you can ask if that company does somethign similar Re: Internship Advice for NOVA - .RJ - 04-18-2011 Most interships are paid, yes, and I would be surprised if that werent the case for a DC area company not to pay - so its probably a moot point and not worth bringing up. But the right unpaid internship will pay more dividends in the long run over a dead end paid job. Re: Internship Advice for NOVA - Evan - 04-18-2011 in many cases if its not a paid internship, that means the company isnt invested in you and doesnt care about the work you do. ie- youre getting coffee and making copies. there are exceptions for prestigious internship programs etc my summer 'internships' were paid pretty well, and was a small software development company looking for good cheap programmers. got some great real world experience and it turned into a full time job after I graduated and the economy shit the bed. Re: Internship Advice for NOVA - WRXtranceformed - 04-18-2011 FWIW I wouldn't work an unpaid internship either. Call me an elitist, but if I was going to work and not get paid for it I would rather just take a couple extra classes at school. I worked in model homes doing everything from cleaning toilets to writing contracts when I was in high school and through college. I made good money for what I was doing though and landed a job immediately out of school. I hear what people are saying about taking a free internship opportunity and career development, but I'm going to play the devil's advocate and say that if a company isn't willing to pay you for your hard work regardless of what level you're at, they either can't afford it or they're stingy. Either way, there are better companies out there to work for. Re: Internship Advice for NOVA - Mike - 04-18-2011 an unpaid internship doesn't have to lead to employment with that particular company. Re: Internship Advice for NOVA - WRXtranceformed - 04-18-2011 Mike Wrote:an unpaid internship doesn't have to lead to employment with that particular company.Truth, but you don't have to work for free to get a good job out of college. Re: Internship Advice for NOVA - Apoc - 04-18-2011 More importantly, why buy the cow when you get the sex for free? Re: Internship Advice for NOVA - Mike - 04-18-2011 someone is humping cows?
