Oil drain pan that doesn't suck - ScottyB - 04-03-2011
i've gone through about 4 of these:

that's the exact one i have right now.
for reasons that elude even me, i continue to buy more of the same crap. it does the following after about 5 uses:
- cap crossthreads, then cracks, then leaks
- plug crosstheads, then cracks, then leaks
- drips everywhere, i get yelled at
and then i end up tossing the whole thing in the dumpster after recycling the oil at Advanced. do you guys know of a really good brand that doesn't do this, and where can i get one? all i want is to be able to seal it up so it doesn't leak when i transport it to empty it, and have it last more than a year.
edit: i'm open to tide bottles if they are effective?

My roommate has been storing the used oil in a big 5+ gallon plastic container, maybe some kind of restaurant supply thing for cooking oil? Still drains into a drain pan though.

my cap cracked as well, I have the exact same pan, but an Antifreeze bottle cap works perfectly and will not crack, no issues with cross threading either.

i'd be up for changing my tactic to just putting up with a shitty drain pan to catch oil, but storing it in something that doesn't leak and that i can transport. i'll have to see if i can find something worthwhile.

when i have them on hand, yeah i'll give it a shot, never tried it before. it'd be nice to have something i can fit a couple drains in though.
i always liked to just transport the drain pan which is why i was asking. less crap to store. practically though, i guess i'll start keeping used oil in something like those jugs.

Nothing beats a generic pan and a jug. If you want something bigger to dump a couple changes in, use a gas can.

I use gallon milk containers from costco (plastic with threaded top and wide mouth). 2 of those will handle my oil in the m3 (8 quarts). Im a milk whore so ive always got tons of em around.

I use the same drain pan and then put it in a Home Despit 5 gallon bucket with lid. Gets me through a few oil changes, it seals well and is much easier to fill/empty than the oil jug the new oil came in or a Tide jug.

I've had a drain pan like that for.... maybe 8 years? Don't overtighten the cap and yeah, assuming you buy your oil in 4-5qt jugs, hang onto them and empty it back in.

Use an ole 5 gallon bucket that hydraulic oil comes in - or find one of those tops anyway..works well.
