Removing scratches from glass? - Jake - 12-09-2010 Soooo I may or may not have scratched the windshield on the Miata. Whatever I used to remove the ice last weekend left some light streaks, which were pretty noticeable just now with the sun setting. Any way to remove them by polishing the glass or whatnot? Or will I have to get a new windshield? What sort of cost am I looking at for new glass? Hrrgh. Re: Removing scratches from glass? - Sully - 12-09-2010 If u have comp, u should be covered. Because it happened at one time and not over time like sand chips in windshields. Insurance covers people who take metal rakes to clean snow off the paint of their cars, should sure as hell cover that. Maybe glass is different though Re: Removing scratches from glass? - Jake - 12-09-2010 Yeah, I know I still have full coverage on this one. Guess I'll have to see what Geico says. Re: Removing scratches from glass? - Sully - 12-09-2010 Ohh geico, my favorite, give me one sec Re: Removing scratches from glass? - HAULN-SS - 12-10-2010 Ive got some compound at the house somewhere that does a decent job of getting rid of scratches in glass..ill have to look later if I can find it and let you know. I used it to get some acid rain etching out of some glass one time. if they arent very deep it will work ok Re: Removing scratches from glass? - Goodspeed - 12-10-2010 Windshields are cheap - go for a PPG (OEM supplier) and its like 250-300 installed on the Miata. If your glass is wrecked from pitting and chips here and there like mine I'd take it as a sign to replace
Re: Removing scratches from glass? - D_Eclipse9916 - 12-10-2010 Windshields are cheap, I got the windshield replcaed on my m3 for $180 bucks with new BMW seals. Contact me if you want to know the place, turnaround was 1.5 hours while I sat there. Re: Removing scratches from glass? - xvxax - 12-10-2010 Last winter I repaired my post-snowpocalypse windshield using a wet sanding method I found on google. Something like 500-2000grit wet, straight lines and then some sort of sealer/polish overtop. Maybe look into that before you replace the windshield, because $180 is $180. Even if you have full coverage, there's going to be a deductible involved. Re: Removing scratches from glass? - Sully - 12-12-2010 My windshield cost between $900-$1,200 and I can't see anything when the sun hits it due to sand chips and stuff like that. So I might try a sanding and buffing procedure. Re: Removing scratches from glass? - Sully - 12-12-2010 Nevermind $1500-$3000 for a new windshield hahaha Re: Removing scratches from glass? - Dave - 12-12-2010 Sully Wrote:Nevermind $1500-$3000 for a new windshield hahahaWTF, is it gold plated along the edge? Re: Removing scratches from glass? - Sully - 12-12-2010 Its got the H.U.D. reflective film stuck in-between the layers of glass. Its a bitch to find and from reading what other people got quoted, it is around $1500, but I guess the extreme cases, it gets quoted up to $3000. Re: Removing scratches from glass? - Sully - 12-12-2010 Didn't say id pay that much for one, and the dark tini doesn't do it the same, its reflective not tinted, u can find hud squares in hud kits but other than that, havnt seen it Re: Removing scratches from glass? - Steve85 - 12-13-2010 Do you have to have that super special film? Similar situation with the C4 ZR-1 some sort of super sun reflective film with a cut out so you can use a radar detector makes it very $$$$, most just replace with a standard windshield. Re: Removing scratches from glass? - Sully - 12-13-2010 No i do not have the film, I just searched and actually found a windshield, it's only $700. I'm not sure where those people got their quotes from. You can use a HUD without the film, but the already hard to see refelction in the daytime goes away and at night, it gets blurry, and you can prolly see it form the outside of the car then too, but not 100% on that. Mine is not visable outside the car with the film Re: Removing scratches from glass? - Evan - 12-27-2010 I had a 240sx with the HUD. It was a retarded gimmick, and you still have the gauges in the dash. Save yourself $500 or so and get a windshield without the reflective panel. Re: Removing scratches from glass? - Sully - 12-27-2010 I don't need a windshield right now and if it breaks, I also have glass coverage so if I need that $700 windshield, allstate will be paying for it, not me. |
