Jewelry ripoff/Christmas present idea - HAULN-SS - 12-03-2010 I am in the process of trying to find some christmas presents. Then I come across this: <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.discount4jewelry.com/Elsa-Peretti-Color-by-the-Yard-bracelet-p4400.html">http://www.discount4jewelry.com/Elsa-Peretti-Color-by-the-Yard-bracelet-p4400.html</a><!-- m --> and this <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.tiffany.com/Shopping/Item.aspx?fromGrid=1&sku=19679756&mcat=148204&cid=287458&search_params=s+5-p+1-c+287458-r+101323353-x+-n+6-ri+-ni+0-t+">http://www.tiffany.com/Shopping/Item.aspx?fromGrid=1&sku=19679756&mcat=148204&cid=287458&search_params=s+5-p+1-c+287458-r+101323353-x+-n+6-ri+-ni+0-t+</a><!-- m --> is this really possible? I kind of had a tiffany bracelet in mind (not the 2k one), but this kind of makes me doubt anything on their site. I've never bought much jewelry..so really the question is: brand name, that comes in a tiffany box, or go get something with more stones/gold/whatever good stuff. Re: Jewelry ripoff/Christmas present idea - D_Eclipse9916 - 12-03-2010 I hate to say it, but 99% of girls just care about the goddamn name. They are more happy showing their friends the "blue box" and saying it was from tiffanys than anything else. Thats the point of most jewelry when we are in this range and receiving a gift, you just look cheap in my opinion if you go "knockoff" or "no-name" for a gift. Getting stuff herself is fine for getting the non-brand name. Re: Jewelry ripoff/Christmas present idea - Apoc - 12-03-2010 HAULN-SS Wrote:brand name, that comes in a tiffany box This... or at least don't buy something that's a cheap knockoff. What I've found most important is buying something "nice" in a style she likes. That means you're like paying attention to her and stuff. Check Blue Nile, they got the goods and their prices aren't as astronomical. Re: Jewelry ripoff/Christmas present idea - HAULN-SS - 12-03-2010 Well so thats my other question - i just randomly found that other thing when i was googling that designer. Is the first one a knock-off? Or is it actually the identical bracelet? And i went to tiffany.com first because it was the only brand name i'd heard of - that was a bracelet in a style she liked. They had a 3 stone one as well that was cheaper and probably just as good. I just wasnt aware that there could be such a swing in prices depending on where you bought, due to the brand name. especially since the bracelet itself doesnt say "tiffany" on it anywhere that I could se Re: Jewelry ripoff/Christmas present idea - Apoc - 12-03-2010 HAULN-SS Wrote:Well so thats my other question - i just randomly found that other thing when i was googling that designer. If it seems cheap, chances are there's a reason. Try reading the descriptions and not just looking at the pretty pictures.

Re: Jewelry ripoff/Christmas present idea - HAULN-SS - 12-03-2010 Oh trust me, I had no intention of buying from there..this was meant more as a general discussion of how to not get *too* ripped off when buying jewelry Re: Jewelry ripoff/Christmas present idea - CaptainHenreh - 12-03-2010 Dear Julie, Thank you so much for not really liking jewelry. Love, Rex Re: Jewelry ripoff/Christmas present idea - Apoc - 12-03-2010 HAULN-SS Wrote:general discussion of how to not get *too* ripped off when buying jewelry -Don't buy retail -Use reputable shops/sites, based on recommendation -For the most part, you get what you pay for -There is a premium for some brands like Tiffany; ROI is mixed (see below) -Some chicks dig brand names, some just don't care Re: Jewelry ripoff/Christmas present idea - JustinG - 12-03-2010 Ive heard good things about Blue Nile, never bought anything from them before though. But ive only made one big jewelry purchase, Casey is just fine with the knock off stuff. Re: Jewelry ripoff/Christmas present idea - HAULN-SS - 12-03-2010 How do you "not buy retail" Does this mean never buy something over the counter? I was in some place at tysons the other day, and some jewelry store was all like "you should buy today, we're having a 50% off sale, and if you do layaway until the 10th you get another 25% off" or some shit like that, that basically would take say a 5k pair of earrings down to 2k. Re: Jewelry ripoff/Christmas present idea - WRXtranceformed - 12-03-2010 Jewelry has a huge markup too, don't be afraid to bargin. Re: Jewelry ripoff/Christmas present idea - Apoc - 12-03-2010 Never pay the sticker price in a brick and mortar joint, unless it's like Tiffany's. The retail markup is so ridiculous, it's well... ridiculous. The reason places can/do discount so much is because they're margins are much higher than you'd ever imagine. I'm willing to bet that if you checked the price of a similar priced item at low-margin place or a reputable online retailer, your $5k for $2k earrings would be even cheaper. When comparing prices, pay attention to the specifics. Even a small difference can play a HUGE role in price. FWIW, my wife's jewelry from Blue Nile (including her engagement ring) routinely appraises for 2-3x what I pay. Re: Jewelry ripoff/Christmas present idea - JustinG - 12-03-2010 Good to know Re: Jewelry ripoff/Christmas present idea - CaptainHenreh - 12-03-2010 Apoc Wrote:Never pay the sticker price in a brick and mortar joint, unless it's like Tiffany's. The retail markup is so ridiculous, it's well... ridiculous. This. When I worked at Montgomery Wards, our employee discount was 40% off whatever the taxable amount was. So if they were having, say, a 25% off sale, I got 40% off that. It was absurd. I (at 16) bought a girl a 500 dollar retail necklace for like 180 bucks. I naturally left the price tag on "by accident", which was pretty win. Later, she broke my heart. Moral of the story? Send that bitch a smiley face. Bitches love smiley faces.
