Short shift vs oem (240sx) - Sully - 11-05-2010
I don't mind the long shifts, actually I kind of like them. But I would really like a firmer shift rather than the one I have now. A lil shorter shift would be nice becasue its kinda like drivin a truck right now, but idk about 40% which is how much all short shifters for 240's go. I don't want rediculously short either. Any advice or experinece with short shifters would be helpful.

Do it....you'll never want a car without one afterwards. But depends on which you go with, B&M shifters or knockoffs would prob be the best choice.
Check with ur 240 peeps to find the best for your car.
I'm running a crappy ebay one but will have a B&M knockoff if DJ ever decides to bring it to me.

Ebay knockoffs are like $40 and B&M are like $200. I'm confused with your post though justin, you say go with a B&M or knockoff. Arn't those two completely opposite ends of the sprectrum

Sorry this may be DSM specific, but the B&M shifter is the best for my car, but they make a knock off that is just like the B&M shifter for 1/4 the price that looks like and functions just like the B&M. So that's what I meant by a knock off. Do not go with pace setter on any of that crap.

The E30 has a B&M on it. I like it, although the bushings are shot so there is slop even when you are in gear. Makes the actual shifts nice.

I'll prolly go B&M because I don't want to chance having a bad experience with a knock off and throwing me off of short throw shofters all together, the only problem is if I end up hating the B&M, I'm stuck with a $200 shifter

You can drive the E30 and see how you like the shift feel. Problem is, you have a shittastic car constantly trying to influence your opinion of just the shifter.

I think DJ has had both the real and knock off and couldn't tell a diff, along with every other person I know with a knock off B&M, couldn't tell the difference, so save yourself $150. Check some reviews, I'm sure someone on a 240 forum has had a knock off and a real one.

Rex's old 240 had a short shifter; he may be able to chime in a little here as well.
Personally, I didn't care one way or another. We've got the stock shifter in our track 240sx and I like it just fine, never had any reason to spend the $$ on a short shifter.
Besides, I'm sure you could find something better to spend that $200 on...

I would go for B&M. The knockoffs are made of aluminum so if you shift hard at all, you're going to run into breakage problems. B&M are steel and mo'betta. I have the B&M in my crx and absolutely love it. it's crisp and not too short.

I had an ebay "short shift kit", I don't remember the 'brand' or even what it was supposed to be a knockoff of.
I was after more firm, confident shifting rather than a "shorter" throw, because I always said a short throw is just a shorter route to a money shift, but in the end, I liked it alot. Can't complain for 40 bucks...

I have a B&M "Ripper Shifter" on the XR's T5 and I like it. I actually find it easer to find the right gear because it is a little more notchy than stock. It is short though, 3-4" from 2nd to 3rd. Good for fast shifts and very, very solid.
