Aluminum Trunk Floor? - Sully - 10-26-2010

So the trunk on the 240 is pretty much toast. I thought about cutting it out and welding in an aluminum sheet, maybe half inch? 1/4 inch? or somewhere inbetween? Any better ideas? My problem is that the rust goes right up to the rear of the trunk so I am not sure how I would cut that out without replacing the whole trunk floor?

Welding probably wouldn't work ( Aluminum to steel), but you could glue it with Pannelbond, rivit it, etc. I know little about 240s so you would have to see how structurally important that area is and ensure whatever you do can hold up to those demands.

Re: Aluminum Trunk Floor? - Maengelito - 10-27-2010

why aluminum and not steel?

Re: Aluminum Trunk Floor? - Sully - 10-27-2010

Just figured aluminum would be lighter and it would ensure the problem wouldn't happen again but with the proper steps, I can ensure it with steel too.

Actually you can "ever do" aluminum to steel... but you would have to do some serious prep after you "welded" the ever do to make sure it didnt rust at the seems. Its just easier to use steel.

Also... weight in the ass end of your car isnt really a bad idea. Even drifters are very calculated with the weight they take out of the ass end.

True, didn't think about the weight that needs to be in the rear. Should I go OEM floor pan for $400 or a flat piece of sheet metal?

Re: Aluminum Trunk Floor? - Maengelito - 10-27-2010

if its just the trunk and there is no structural support, just do sheet metal. cheap and easy!

Re: Aluminum Trunk Floor? - Sully - 10-27-2010

Should I cut out the old rusted part or weld over it

Re: Aluminum Trunk Floor? - Mike - 10-27-2010

cut it.

Mike Wrote:cut it.

they call it cancer for a reason... if you just weld over it, it will spread to the new metal. when you are dont cutting it, prep it well for the welding... then seal the shit out of it when you are done

That's how I always looked at rust but someone (not anyone on the forum) told me to weld over the old stuff

You need to cut it out. Maybe find a donor car that has a good one or have some one make you an nice new panel.
