Need some website suggestions - Ole - 10-14-2010

I currently house my racing website with an old friend's company. The issue is, I don't know how to do anything with it, it seems expensive at $100+ /yr. and supposedly I cannot house any video on the site (not that big a deal). I see ads that offer hosting and easy to build sites.... Anybody have any suggestions on who to use? I would like to list some parts for sale, potential cars for sale and also update it easily....

Thanks in advance

Sounds like you need a content management system (CMS). We use one for the 944 Cup website (<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.44cup.com/">http://www.44cup.com/</a><!-- m -->) and my dad (61) doesn't have any problems updating it. You basically log into a website and you're given options to edit things using a fairly simply WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) editor. You don't need to know any code to do anything.

I have a free CMS installed on our host, but if you don't want to buy hosting space look at somewhere like Wordpress (<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://wordpress.com/">http://wordpress.com/</a><!-- m -->). You get 3 gigs and a bunch of themes to choose from for free. If you want to customize the page, expand your space or use your own domain you can add those on for a fee.

If you want to use your own host, check out ipower (<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.ipower.com/ipower/web-hosting/unix-compare-plans.bml">http://www.ipower.com/ipower/web-hosting/unix-compare-plans.bml</a><!-- m -->). I use it for 944 Cup, my own site and I'm pretty sure Mike uses it too. For $4 month (half off right now) you get unlimited space, transfer and a free domain. You can then install a CMS (including Wordpress) free with just a few clicks in your user control panel. They also offer drag and drop type web builders independent of a CMS, but I have no idea how well they work. If you want to use them, let me know and I'll see if I can find a referral discount code.

(Lastly, (here are) a few (more) parenthesis (because I don't) think this post (had) (enough.))

I probably know less about web design than your 61 yr. old dad or a 2 yr. old child.....

Not really possible.

He just clicks on "edit content", select which page he wants and it gives him a window with editing tools like MS Word.

Can you see about that referral code? I am ready to do this now.

Re: Need some website suggestions - Ole - 12-16-2010

heh, only took me 2 months to make that decision....

Re: Need some website suggestions - Apoc - 12-16-2010

I can't find a discount code. I think if you enter my domain (mylastname.com) in the referral field when signing up, I get $10... but that's it.

Re: Need some website suggestions - Ole - 01-03-2011

Already signed up. Didn't do something properly so I need to get on the phone with support. The old company sent me a nasty that something is still pointing to his servers. Unfortunately I had to go to FL. to see my dad who suffered a stroke. I will get to it soon though.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

Evan, Thanks for setting up the original even though you had less that stellar support from both me and the other company.
