2011 V6 Mustang, next awesome "spec car"? - D_Eclipse9916 - 07-30-2010

Okay, if you havent been hiding under a rock you have heard about the new v6 mustang. I for one LOVE the looks of the 2011, and started looking at specs for shits and giggles....Highlight for those below:

305HP /280TQ
3400~LBS
Six-speed manual
Standard LSD (optional 3.31 rear)
7000RPM
5.1 0-60 bone stock....outta a v6....

With the way prices crush on V6 mustangs to less than 10k within 4-5 years does anybody see this as an awesome new spec or even HPDE lapper in 5 years? And since we know Ford will build a bajillion v6s there should be plenty of engines, parts, and Ford Factory Support in terms of parts. This just reminded me a lot of a e36/e46 M3 in specs except ridiculously cheap. Plus....drool at this track-prepped one...........

No.

I drove the ├╝ber-base 2011 V6 model a month or so ago. I think the motor is great, plenty of power/torque and easy to daily drive or put on the track. What I didn't like was the suspension. The rear end was all over the place and the car just felt very unsettled in any hard cornering - I think the 'track pack' would help a lot. Granted, if you're racing a Spec class they will have requirements anyway. For HPDEs, I think a stock one with modest suspension massaging would be great.

No.

Mustang enthusiasts would be the target drivers and the guy who appears to be the most enthusiastic about mustangs on here says no so I doubt it'd come to fruition. The Mustang cup or whatever it is that was in GRM last year is where most mustang guys will run for a spec series.
The shame of it is you're right in the sense that it's a good cheap car that'll have plenty of tubs out there for replacements and aftermarket support (just use the V8 suspension parts). Not to mention who would feel bad about banging up a v6 mustang?
The typical mustang owner wants that rumpity V8 noise though, and you could go as far as to make the v6 faster than the v8 but from what I've heard from several mustang dudes, they'd still prefer the 8.

do you see any brand new, big, heavy, expensive car "Spec" racing series that are successful?
Certainly not in club racing.
Last I was at the track, the series with old, cheap busted mustangs didnt have many racers.

Call it "pro" and get some TV time and the rich guys will come, but thats a whole nother ballgame.

You hit the nail on the head, a V6 doesn't make the right noises. And +1 regarding the comments made about the Mustang Challenge series.

As I said, 4-5-6 years down the line when they are 6-10 grand? lol how is that brand new expensive?

And American Iron, CMC has always seen decent numbers from what ive seen.

PS- whens the last time youve been out to the track Evan  Get your butt back out there!

Anything "spec" series really benefits from cheap (read: $500-1000) shells.

Re: 2011 V6 Mustang, next awesome "spec car"? - D_Eclipse9916 - 08-02-2010

touche, maybe my thread title should be more awesomely fun HPDE car? lol I dunno I would have a shit ton of fun tracking it.

The older cars were pretty awful on track with stock suspension. No idea if things have improved.

Mine was a 5-speed, so it's ok. Just one step down from a pure track car, really...
