spinning ignition? - BLINGMW - 07-14-2010
So what is it when my ignition works just fine for weeks, a month, but every now and then I hop in to start it, and it spins around.... around.... 3, 4 times, I jiggle the steering wheel a bit, spin again... oh there it goes, perfectly fine now. Away I go. How does it just spin around freely like nothing's there and then be fine 98% of the time?
I don't really understand what's going on in there. :dunno: Am I going to be stranded suddenly one day? Do I replace the lock cylinder now before that happens or will it get a lot worse and happen more often first?

Its an E36 thing, half the cars that come into work for service do it, I remove the key, jiggle the wheel and try again. I don't know anything else about it though, mine has never done it, and I don't know if its going to get worse.

Yep, seen it happen in a friends car. Never happened on mine knock on wood. It is really weird though if you accidently use someone elses key (yes way too many people have m3s now) that it just spins with the wrong key.
