Job for Fall Semester - Levey - 06-09-2010
I only have class T/Th this Fall and was wondering how plausible it would be to obtain a job at one of the dealerships in town. I don't mean washing cars though, maybe something with a little higher pay grade. This pending the training course or whatever is required of course. Is this idea completely crazy?

Harrisonburg Honda has a big sign on the road saying they are hiring for all positions. Also, if you're looking for a low stress job during the semester, being a recon guy would actually be a pretty sweet deal IMO....that or transporting cars every so often.
One thing to consider...training for sales positions is often handled off site and maybe for a few weeks.

I hope your a glutten for punishment. Our recon guy/guys were CONSTANTLY yelled at for not getting cars out fast enough/clean enough. I know Harrisonburg Honda is the same way. You have to juggle between lot cars, deliveries and service cars and make everyone happy (especially the owner). As for higher pay grade, I'm not sure what your looking for. You might could get on as a parts runner a few days a week, but that's still pretty much minimum wage. You could try your hand at selling but don't expect to make shit for money only working 3 days a week. To make money selling you have to make yourself available to your customers when it's convenient for THEM, not just a few days a week. They'll just come back when your not there and buy from someone else. DX drivers are usually old dudes who are friends of the owners, but you could always give them your name; but when I worked at the dealership we never let younger people do any DX driving...because young guys (especially car guys) are more likely to beat on the cars.
So, give it a shot for recon or parts delivery, but don't expect it to be a nice walk in the park.

I dont think you're going to find anything at a dealership above a washing cars pay grade. Like Ryan said there is no such thing as a part time salesman, and a lot of salesmen I know are more like 60 hr/week salesman and they still just make OK money. The days of the 100k/yr salesman are long gone, according to my dad (whos in the bidness).
And then there is really no position between selling and washing cars, you might get a job as a receptionist or at a parts counter, but again, I dont know if you could get anything part time.
If youre looking for a good way to make money at school I suggest delivering late night. Most of the places in town are usually hiring and if you can hash the hours and the drunk assholes you make damn good money. I've never made less than 10-12ish an hour on my worst night, and one night I made almost $200 in a 12 hour double shift. Or you could try and find a paying internish position through the school. I wouldn't even fool with the dealers in town though, you don't wanna deal with that crap.
Don't knock washing cars, its how I bring home the bacon all summer, granted I work at a tiny little high end place, so I do 10000 things+wash cars which is nice to break up the monotony.

I used to work at a dealer doing parts counter/lot porter/service cashier/car washing... it was a pretty good gig for summer/winter but sometimes it was a lot of hustle.
Go talk to hburg honda and see what they have for you.

^ I just realized now that we're working the same shifts I'm not going to be able to borrow your car when it snows. Meaning I'll have a lowered RWD car on summer tires, or a motorcycle that I'll ride in the snow when Queen Elizabeth shits a cactus in Antarctica on a baby penguin.
