Car ADD - What Should I Do? - ViPER1313 - 02-09-2010 Car ADD is really hitting me again, and I don't know what I want to do with my Talon and SHO. SHO: Runs well but needs some semi-major work to be perfect (nothing less than perfect has ever been OK with me for this car). Clutch will need to be done within the next 10k miles, 60k mile service needs to be done (cam / crank seals, timing belt, water pump, etc...), there is a clunk in the right front that needs to be addressed. I rarely drive it at this point as it is a pain in the winter (rides harsh, low ground clearance, trans crunches while really cold), and the Pontiac is just as fast, roomy and doesn't beat me up. I fall back in love with it ever time I am on a windy road and push the tach past 5k though, and with a little bit more tweaking the car would be back in its prime. I also have a ton of spare parts for this car which makes future maintenance easier. I would lose my ass on this car selling it (could probably only get $2500 for it on a good day.) Talon: Runs perfectly and all maintenance is up to date. Functions great as a track car and winter beater, but I really want to step up the power (350 to 400 wheel) and the amount of money and time that is needed to get this car there is daunting (clutch, injectors, fuel pump, inter-cooler, down-pipe, wide-band, etc) This car is low mile (114k), could be returned to stock very easily and I could probably make money selling it. I am debating on keeping the cars as they are for now, just keeping up with the maintenance, etc while I am investing more time on my house. I have also been kicking around the idea of selling the SHO to finance a build on my Talon, or just selling both of them and either buying something completely different (RWD) or another Talon that is already built. Thoughts? Suggestions? Ninja Edit: Due to Mike's helpful response, I would like to add that I do like both cars, and that any car I bought to replace them would have to function as a track car, have at least 250hp and not be FWD. Re: Car ADD - What Should I Do? - Mike - 02-09-2010 sell both. turds suck. Re: Car ADD - What Should I Do? - ViPER1313 - 02-09-2010 Mike Wrote:sell both. turds suck. Thanks for that constructive thought. :finger: Re: Car ADD - What Should I Do? - D_Eclipse9916 - 02-09-2010 Honestly? Sell both. The 1g Talon is mainly good for drag only. Its really an inferior suspension setup limited by small tire width (245/255s is all you can pretty much put under there, in a 2900lb car and thats partially stripped). The SHO will never be worth anything and you realize the pontiac is just as good, so why have two cars that do the same thing? I say get something different, you have your whole life ahead of you, and WAYYYY too many cars out there that are excellent to be stuck on one or two platforms. Have you seen anything that excited you? Go drive a few cars. You also have a house payment, ,so make sure whatever platform your trading to you dont have another car payment. Re: Car ADD - What Should I Do? - Evan - 02-09-2010 lol "only" 255s You left out the most important part. What are your goals, what do you want to do with the car? Re: Car ADD - What Should I Do? - ScottyB - 02-09-2010 sell'em both while the talon is reliable/can make you money and the SHO is still worth something at the mileage you're at. it's a tough call because they both aren't worth much and you've put some solid sweat equity into them. however, it sounds to me like you want to be on track and upgrade your home at the same time. you need your DD, but 2 project cars is no bueno. so it sounds like you need 1 reliable, fun track car. the SHO will never be a track car because (i think) it's your weekend toy and you don't want to ball it up. the talon will be fun until shit starts to break at the track at those power levels and you realize like DJ did that there are better cars for track duty. maybe with the proceeds buy a fox body? what's your budget for what you want to do to your house? Re: Car ADD - What Should I Do? - ViPER1313 - 02-09-2010 Evan Wrote:lol "only" 255s If I sold both, I would replace them with an HPDE car / fun road car - it would have to do both, be street legal and under 10g. I really want to get something that seriously moves in the 300+hp category (Z28/Mustang, 300ZX, built Talon, Evo 8 ) or something more unique and older, like a Porsche 944 with a V8 / BMW E30 w/ M3 swap. I am more interested in powerful + can be tracked compared to well handling & light. Re: Car ADD - What Should I Do? - .RJ - 02-09-2010 Sell them both. You have a job and you can buy a grown up car now  Re: Car ADD - What Should I Do? - Evan - 02-09-2010 the question after "what do you want to do" isnt how much hp you want, its what can you afford, not just up front but as a track car , ongoing consumables and maintanence. more powerful = more $$. Is it really more fun to only track a car once a year when you could be at the track once or twice every month? its a huge mistake to write off "well handling and light" when you havent put any time behind the wheel of something that fits that description. its a much more rewarding and fun experience at the track compared to just being pushed back in your seat on the straights -- and I did start out my track career in a high hp car. (and no, Im not going to recommend a miata) Re: Car ADD - What Should I Do? - Evan - 02-09-2010 S2000 would be my first choice, with E36 M3, MR2 Turbo, and 350Z all worth looking at too. btw - AWD is only slightly less suck than FWD on track. Is it really more fun to only track a car once a year when you could be at the track once or twice every month? The Talon (as it sits) meets this definition perfectly. Stock parts are dirt cheap, the car has proven itself reliable on track, and it's a lot of fun out there. It's not super light and it's not the best handling platform, but it is more than enough car to learn with at the track. I have always wanted a truly fast car though, and neither the SHO or Talon currently meets that desire. Re: Car ADD - What Should I Do? - D_Eclipse9916 - 02-09-2010 Evan Wrote:S2000 would be my first choice, with E36 M3, MR2 Turbo, and 350Z all worth looking at too. S2000s have huge oiling issues, I researched them thoroughly as it was my first choice, the E36 was the second. 350Z was my third. Ended up ruling out s2000s because of oiling issues and their tendency in AP1s to lose retainers, and both motors liking to shit themselves without a lot of work into fixing those issues (yes drilling the head is one of them). Of course, I took it with a grain of salt because I had a feeling it was liek the crankwalk issue, only 3% ACTUALLY being crankwalk, the rest because of stupid shit. But for the price of an s2000 motor (ouchies), I decided to forgo it. Plus stock parts are pretty expensive compared to the incredibly dirt cheap suspension/motor parts on an e36. Brakes that bone stock will haul that thing faster than any other car ive been in...for the price of $40 per rotor. I would not suggest an E36 tho to Adam....very little headroom for even myself.. Re: Car ADD - What Should I Do? - CaptainHenreh - 02-09-2010 Sell both. Neither is a good track car. Of course, you didn't list any good track cars in your prospects either. (Ask Chapin how a 300ZX works out on track.) But Deej is sort of right. A 1G DSM is hardly an ideal track car, and like RJ said. You've got a big boy job now, you can get something worth a damn. Re: Car ADD - What Should I Do? - Jake - 02-09-2010 Well you already have the Pontiac as your DD, newer, reliable, etc. so at this point I think you can afford to go more quirky/oddball. Granted, the SHO is 'oddball' in my mind because it's a built family sedan, and at the time, it was pretty damn quick. So I think it's cool from that regard. The Talon, eh, DSMs don't do a whole lot for me. I agree that neither car is an "ideal" track platform. I agree with Evan, there's a lot to be said for well handling and light. Since you're looking for moar horsepowers, my best recommendation is to keep it balanced. Don't give up on handling just because you want it to be fast. I can't really make any solid recommendations, but in looking at your list of 'prospectives' I'll say this. Why buy a more built Talon? You've had some fun with that car and platform, why not move on to something different? My car ADD is bad too, the difference is you have a legit job that produces solid paychecks. So... you can afford to do something about it. I say sell both the SHO and Talon and go for something new to you. Re: Car ADD - What Should I Do? - Apoc - 02-09-2010 CaptainHenreh Wrote:Sell both. +1 I've realized that constantly wanting to "do things" with the cars I owned meant I didn't really like the car that much. I said I did, and they kept me somewhat entertained, but car ADD comes from a car not really doing what you want it to. I don't really understand the 300+ hp requirement if you're tracking it. I mean I understand the desire, but it's mostly reserved for young kids or old men. If you aren't going to drag it, the only thing all that hp does is get you in trouble faster. Get something quick, balanced and easy to work on. Everything is else overkill. Re: Car ADD - What Should I Do? - WRXtranceformed - 02-09-2010 Sell both, buy something else. I have always had car ADD too. If you want another Talon that's already built up, go ahead and do it. Let someone else take the hit on invested parts as long as you know the build was well done. There are tons of people that are dumping project / track cars now to cut costs or due to lack of interest. I second the fox body Stang, or even one of the 4 banger turbo SVOs, I always thought those were really cool! Re: Car ADD - What Should I Do? - fiveoh2go - 02-09-2010 Sell 'em both and buy a fox body. Throw the Maximum Motorsports catalog at said fox and pwn all. Re: Car ADD - What Should I Do? - .RJ - 02-09-2010 The problem with S2000's isnt the motor, its being able to get a rollbar in one for track use. What's your budget? There's gotta be fun stuff out there that fits under it without the suck. And what do you want to do with it? Gut it and cage it? Leave it stock and just go to the track and boulevard pimp?
