Some "hot" disease stats - Mike - 10-30-2009

Being a Swine Flu skeptic, I decided to take a deeper look into the "epidemics" of our times... Below you'll find all the "hot" diseases that were all over the news. Gathering this data was a bitch; shouldn't WHO or CDC have a nice chart of this stuff? Anyway, interesting findings...

Year Thing Deaths
1347 - 1352 Bubonic Plague 25000000 (33% of Europeans)
1989 Ebola 224
1996 Mad Cow very few
2002 West Nile 284
2003 SARS 775
2004 Avian Flu 32
2005 Avian Flu 43
2006 Avian Flu 79
2007 Avian Flu 59
2008 Avian Flu 33
2009 Swine Flu 5600

Did I miss anything?

In the scheme of things, it's still nothing, but it's getting a lot more people than most of the news-making shit:[Image: l.php?u=http%253A%252F%252Ffarm3.static....d7e&ref=mf]

Re: Some "hot" disease stats - CaptainHenreh - 10-30-2009

But as you posted on Facebook, all of those combined pale in comparison to AIDS, Cancer, cardiovascular disease, hell, I bet swimming pools killed more people in 2003 than SARS did...

Re: Some "hot" disease stats - Mike - 10-30-2009

right, right, as i just posted here too. i just found it interesting that of all the bullshit we do hear on the news and worry about over the years, this one does actually kill when compared to the others.

Re: Some "hot" disease stats - Mike - 10-30-2009

It is for me, and has been for a few of your posts. I thought it was weird because it didn't seem relevant, but I thought 'Hey, it's Mikey...'

So if it's news to you...

On average, 30 to 50k people die each year from the regular flu......

Swine flu is a media hype.

Swine flu is a media hype.

that is not the point of this thread, and yes, we know that, as evidenced by a few posts up.

Re: Some "hot" disease stats - .RJ - 10-30-2009

There was a story on the news yesterday about hospitals overflowing with sick people. No shit sherlock. Kick off a media frenzy about how OMG EVERYONE IS DYING FROM PIG FLU and what the fuck you think you're gonna get?

Re: Some "hot" disease stats - rezarxt - 10-30-2009

Speaking of swine flu I think im coming down with something. Coughing a lot, horrible congestion, really tired, headache...yeah and it hit halloween weekend....

Re: Some "hot" disease stats - Dave - 10-30-2009

Just for reference, can you add the numbers for the bubonic plague in there?

I know it's not recent and therefore treatment isn't comparable, but then it'll be a good reference for "when shit hits the fan" sick.

Re: Some "hot" disease stats - Mike - 10-30-2009

your wish is my command. data is all over the place. i posted numbers from it at its peak. over history, it has killed 200 million.
