Local ski resorts? Lots of kids stuff too? - NASAlaura - 01-06-2009
Thought this would be a good place to ask!
Since there is a pretty good chance that we won't get snow here in Richmond AGAIN, I am considering taking the kids to a ski place for a weekend. I used to love skiing but I am not sure I want to go on that adventure with two little kids right now, so I am thinking that we might just enjoy playing in the snow and doing snow tubing, etc. Where would you recommend we go? I would be looking for a place that has good outdoor fun in the snow and some indoor things for kids (arcade type stuff, maybe an indoor pool?). And a place that has a cool lodge type bar/restaurant is a must too.
I have looked into Wintergreen and Massanutten but the lodging all gets pretty bad reviews at those places. Snowshoe might be too far although it looks like it has the most to do.
Any help would be appreciated!

my coworker took his 2 year old to massanutten for snow tubing last year. He said it was fun but didnt exactly rave about it.
Ive never done the kid stuff at Snowshoe, but everything else about that resort is far superior to Wintergreen and Massanutten so I would expect the snowtubing and kid stuff to be similar.

Snowshoe is going to be your best bet. That place blows pretty much any mountain south of VT out of the water in terms of night life, nice places to stay, good skiing and activities. It's a long drive but I think you'll find it worth it.

The cool thing about Massanutten is the indoor water park. So that's something to consider too if Jack and Cooper are little swimmers. I thought the snow tubing was fun at Massanutten when I went, but it was super hard to get tickets for if your a local.

How old are the kids?
We spent a couple days at Bryce Resort over the holidays. I practically grew up there and it is certainly not as large as Snowshoe / Massanutten / Wintergreen but it is family friendly. My 5yo was in skiwee and I had the 3yo on some child plastic skis and the teens went snowtubing.
SkiWee is for kids 5-7(?). SkiWee takes them off your hands for 3hrs. I only know of one set of condos that has a pool. The Mini-Rider program is designed for young first-time knuckle-draggers (snowboard).
There isn't all that much else to do there but a day on the slopes wipes kids out.

I would say north, but you said it was too far.
I am actually here in Mont-Tremblant Canada for the week skiing. Its amazing! The skiing is completely different and theres a ton of others to do (luge, tubing skating etc. free with lift passes)
I cant comment on massanutten's other activities, but since there are very few runs there and they are insanely short so a long stay there is...meh I would assume.

Thanks for the tips everyone. Jack is 7 and Cooper is 3. I guess I could look into them skiing but I think I would rather do that when we have at least two or three days to be there. Since they would only be there for a day and a half I was thinking we might just do the tubing and enjoy the snow for the first time.
Any recommendations for lodging at Wintergreen, Bryce, Massanutten, or Snowshoe? Is it better to go through the resorts or try to rent a condo from a private owner? Thanks.

Then to be honest, as much as I love the little place, Bryce is probably not for you on this trip. The tube park is smaller and there isn't as much to do apres' tubing as the other places.
I think for the amount of time you're going Massanutten or Wintergreen are probably the best mix of travel time / things to do.
Of course if you decide to go to Bryce, I will trade the key to my parents house (they be in FL) for a NASA-MA HPDE weekend :wink:

Hmmm.........for two weekends at Bryce, I could definitely think about a trade! But it sounds like your parents are there a lot so not sure if that would be possible. E-mail me laura at nasaracing.net if we want to try to figure this out!

i just saw this, but i would consider going to Snowshoe or Seven Springs -- both resorts offer great skiing and plenty of activities away from the slopes, especially Seven Springs
