Is it necessary... - Chris - 08-05-2004 ...to do a coolant change before tracking your car as recommended by NASA? "In addition, we recommend the following: A full tank of gas A fresh oil change Fresh, full coolant Fresh high-temp brake fluid (like AP550 or ATE Super Blue or Ford HD) Brake pads/shoes with at least 1/2 of original thickness remaining" I wasn't sure if you guys usually do this before going on track. I've already put super blue fluid in for the brakes and clutch, brake pads will be ordered in the next couple weeks, and the Azenis arrived today! Now I just need to get them mounted and do an oil change just before Slummit. - Dave - 08-05-2004 i try to keep less than two track/autoX events on each oil change and I like to flush my coolant once/year. I just keep an eye on my pads, although my rotors seem to be the major wear item in my brakes. - .RJ - 08-05-2004 Get a test strip from vatozone - will tell you how good your coolant is. I am running 75% water/25% coolant + 1 bottle water wetter. - white_2kgt - 08-05-2004 How many miles do you have on the coolant in there now? Do you ever have any cooling problems? If the answer is less than 50k and no then probably not. Most of preping a car for the track is common sense stuff. Always, always change the oil and check the brakes (pads and fluid). Full tank of gas is b/c you are going to need it anyway! Right G.! ![]() -c - Mike - 08-05-2004 I haven't touched the coolant in my car since I got it... Change oil, put in some better brake fluid, and get some brakes pads... That's it. - Maengelito - 08-05-2004 it wouldnt hurt to change the coolant, but if you arent having cooling problems, then i wouldnt be overly concerned about it... - BLINGMW - 08-05-2004 do test the PH like RJ sugested, although I understand you can test with a multimeter too. I could look up how to do that if you can't find it somewhere. The coolant does lose its anti-corosion properties after a while, and surprise, water and iron make rust. It also produces a current while it's doing it, that's why it can be detected with a multimeter. - .RJ - 08-05-2004 Iron? - BLINGMW - 08-05-2004 bah, all those honda engines all alum? fuck y'all then. 8) - Evan - 08-05-2004 MichaelJComputer Wrote:I haven't touched the coolant in my car since I got it...me neither. *shrug* been on the "to-do but not all that important" list for a while the car has not spontaneously exploded - .RJ - 08-05-2004 Evan Wrote:the car has not spontaneously exploded The demise is just rather slow. - Evan - 08-05-2004 .RJ Wrote:The demise is just rather slow.I think I just saw your car drive by! Quick make sure its isnt stolen! - Sijray21 - 08-05-2004 is changing the coolant difficult? i need to do it to mine as well as change the oil oil probably tomorrow - Ryan T - 08-05-2004 My coolant hasn't been touched since 1996... - Dave - 08-05-2004 theguywiththeSi Wrote:is changing the coolant difficult?find the stopcock on the radiator and turn it. Put bucket underneath. Let it all drain out. Fill back up. I recognize there is more coolant still in the engine, so I repeated this process several times. - Sijray21 - 08-05-2004 where do you dispose of the coolant? - .RJ - 08-06-2004 Dave Wrote:I recognize there is more coolant still in the engine, so I repeated this process several times. There should be a drain on the block somewhere. For hondas its on the front of the block just left of the exhaust manifold. You'll need a breaker bar. - BLINGMW - 08-06-2004 theguywiththeSi Wrote:where do you dispose of the coolant? I remember finding the answer online at a government site... as long as there's not oil in it, you can just pour it down the drain. hock: Aparently, sewer treatment plants have no problem with it.
- Mike - 08-06-2004 yeah, once the coolant is dilluted in the sewer it is no longer harmful to anything. - Sijray21 - 08-06-2004 BLINGMW Wrote:theguywiththeSi Wrote:where do you dispose of the coolant? wow that really is a shock to me hock: . I remember they had the whole pets drinking coolant special with the news ( something like a 5 day thing about it ) sometime last year.
