Fatality at VIR - G.Irish - 08-18-2008

One of the Red Bull Rookies Cup riders died today after falling and getting struck by another rider.

Quote:Toriano Wilson, a road racer from Bermuda, fell on the track during the first lap and was accidentally struck by another rider while attempting to get out of the way.

Toriano was airlifted to UNC Medical Center for treatment, but later succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead early Monday morning. The other rider was transported to Duke Medical Center in Durham, NC and suffered a broken left arm and broken left femur. He is in a stable condition.

The AMA and Red Bull have a long history in racing and every effort is made to create the safest possible environment for all participants. Unfortunately, racing also carries inherent risks. This was a tragic accident and our thoughts are with both families at this time.

Apparently this was the first weekend his parents didn't come with him to the race, I can't imagine how they feel right now. What a tough blow for his family and friends, not to mention the Red Bull Rookies Cup program.

I was just thinking about it, but that's 3 motorcycle racing fatalities this year where someone fell and got hit by someone else (the other two being Craig Jones in World SuperSport and Alex Lyskawa (12 years old) in a club race at Summit Point).

What a shame, god speed lad.

So sad. Racing on the track and riding on the street do have their own risks no matter how you slice it.

So close to home to, slummit and VIR taking two of the 3. I did not think Craig Jones got hit though, I could be wrong as I watched the vid once, and didn't watch again.

RIP and condolences to the family.

He got hit by Andrew Pitt - he had nowhere to go.
