speeding tickets. - balactm - 07-24-2008 so i dodged a speeding ticket today i think because the cop didn't clock me. he pulled me over because "it seemed as if" i was exceeding the speed limit. i was in a rental car because of work and so i told him exactly who i worked for, why the car smelled like transmission and brakes (because it had <10 miles on it and not because i was "racing" it) and he ran my license and basically gave me a warning. without clocking me, could he have given me a ticket for something else? Re: speeding tickets. - Ginger - 07-24-2008 87jdmmr2 Wrote:without clocking me, could he have given me a ticket for something else? Sure - the book's thick enough that they could find a way to give you any number of tickets... if a cop really wants to nail you, he will. Whether the judge sees it as pointless, bullish behavior is another matter, though. - balactm - 07-24-2008 like what? - NTIman - 07-24-2008 Ask Kaan about speeding tickets, I believe he got one a while back that was total bullshit, they nailed him for loud exhaust too (which was legit), but he went into court with his shit together, proved that to catch up with someone driving the speed limit you have to travel faster than the car your chasing, and was honest about his exhaust, and it went well for him. The cop however... not so much. The thread is on here somewhere, I'm too lazy to look it up. - balactm - 07-25-2008 yeah. that was part of it. the spot he claimed to have seen me was about a mile from where he pulled me...after 2 turns, a windy road and driving next to me for about 1/8 of a mile. luckily i didn't get a ticket though. other wise i totally would have fought it. - Ole - 07-25-2008 Were you speeding? - Ginger - 07-25-2008 87jdmmr2 Wrote:like what? Ask me next time I get a ticket - the book is pretty big. There's no way you can actually legitimately remember all the rules all the time. Length/distance of having your blinker on, following distance, etc. and they're all the obvious ones. I've been told by several officers if that if they want to get you, they will... in my experience I've got no reaon to believe that's wrong. - CaptainHenreh - 07-25-2008 He doesn't have to "clock you". He can write you a ticket if he perceives you to be exceeding the speed limit. If you were speeding, and the officer thought it would stand up in court, he is within his rights to give you a speeding ticket. If he can't give an exact speed, but knows you were going faster than the limit, he can give you a "failure to obey an official sign" or whatever. He can also make your life totally miserable by asking to search your car, inspecting your tires, etc. (Not to mention the stuff andrew mentioned, following distance, lane changes, putting your tire on either the yellow OR the white line, etc...) - .RJ - 07-25-2008 zomg the cops are out to get you - Ginger - 07-25-2008 .RJ Wrote:zomg the cops are out to get you They don't seem to have a problem getting you

Back in my speed racer days, I got a ticket for just that: "failure to obey a highway sign - speed limit sign." It's bullshit because they didn't actually clock you and it's their word against yours, but it's not bullshit because if you pass a cop when they're going the speed limit, technically you're speeding  - ViPER1313 - 07-25-2008 CaptainHenreh Wrote:He doesn't have to "clock you". In Virginia they can also give you a "general reckless" if they think you are speeding like a madman but didn't clock you. Had that happen - not fun. - JustinG - 07-25-2008 ViPER1313 Wrote:In Virginia they can also give you a "general reckless" if they think you are speeding like a madman but didn't clock you. I was extremely polite and apologetic (and about to crap myself) and the cop gave me the citation. I asked what my options were and she said I could pay the ticket or go to court where she could explain what she saw and why she gave the ticket.CaptainHenreh Wrote:If he can't give an exact speed, but knows you were going faster than the limit, he can give you a "failure to obey an official sign" or whatever.
