Koni strut inserts - ScottyB - 07-22-2008

i know Andy has installed these, and i think RJ? anyone else here gut their stock struts and install Koni inserts? unfortunately for us subaru people with struts, Koni does not offer a direct replacement and instead only offers an insert.

i'm thinking of ditching my STi struts (but keeping the springs) in favor of gutting my stock struts and installing Koni yellows. i like the idea of an adjustable shock so that road trips are bearable but autocrossing settings can be dialed in within minutes. however, i don't know if i'm up to hacking my struts apart.

did you guys have an easy time with it? is all the hype about koni yellows worth the money? whatever suspension i go with next will likely be the last and i'll stick with it. i want to make sure i'm not getting in over my head or killing my wallet unnecessarily.

Do you have to cut and weld the strut body? Or does the top of the strut unscrew allowing you to remove the internals and replace with a koni insert?

you have the cut the strut open with a pipe cutter/grinder (no screw). once the insert is in, you anchor it with a nut that goes through the bottom of the strut body (you have to center and drill the hole).

sorry, thought it was the same procedure for inserts on any car.

my concern is that even with the right tools, is it a huge job aka will i end up doing this again:

My $.02 - I'd pay a shop to do the strut work, and then install them myself.

personally I only choose to support a company if the comany supports what I drive.....
those inserts are a clusterfuck. IMO buy something that fits the car.

they were lots better than the konis on your DA back-to-back on the same track is what they were Wink

Dammit I cant find the wing table picture Sad

That DA was more worn out than andrew's sister.

I did inserts on the SHO - not that bad. Just make sure that you have a sawzall before you do the job - I spent an hour doing the first strut with a hacksaw, then went out to the store and bought a new power tool. Only thing that sucks is the mess created by drilling the first hole in the bottom of the strut.

thanks for the feedback. sounds like i might be pushing it a bit with my non-power tools and awesome parking lot workspace. i have enough problems when i have people providing help and holding my hand through some steps....

i'm still tempted but unless i can find some pre-hacked struts or some people willing to do the work for beer i may look at some other options.
