need suggestions/advice (momentary lapse of judgement?) - DierwulfBL - 05-20-2008

Hey what's up guys. This is your resident forum stalker aka Jordan. Ok well i stumbled across what i thought was the deal of a lifetime, here's what it is:

$1000

-1995 Eagle Talon Tsi (FWD turbo) 120k
-newish 16g turbo (20k)
-new timing belt (5k)
-new clutch (5k)
-BOV (no name piece of crap venting to atmosphere)
-manual boost controller
-gauges (boost, a/f, nasty rice tach)
-Body has newish paint nothing majorly wrong with appearance

the catch: Developed a rod knock and "started overheating" so the dude pulled over turned the car off, and got it towed to his house. Yea ok this kid is like 19/20 years old so who knows if that's really what went down.

I figured I'd throw some bearings on it and resell it for ~3500 but obviously DSMs can be a bitch so i wanna know what you all think, should i tear into this motor and find out its beyond repair, or just let it go, or lemme know if 1000 is too much. Travis said to get him down to 800. DSM help needed (like what shit is prolly busted/how much to fix). By the way i do all my own work so labor prices are not needed, just raw materials prices. THANK YOU in advance

I have some dry property in the Everglades for $1,000

I'll take it if i can resell it for 3500

- CaptainHenreh - 05-20-2008

It's not a terrible deal, but it'll basically need a whole new bottom end. And when I say "whole new bottom end" I mean probably a new crank.

A whole new engine would be cheaper. Don't buy it if you intend to flip it, unless you intend to part it out.

- DierwulfBL - 05-20-2008

thanks for the input, well if the knock just started happening i could get some bearings matched to the crank at the machine shop (pull the whole thing apart) and put new shit in the engine while im in there.......i mean 800 for car ~1000 to fix, sell for 3500-4000, doing all my own labor (and i have lots of spare time). Cause i mean if the crank is still in spec, a bearing set will cost like..........50 bucks (ebay) cometic head gasket is like 90 (ebay) so really the most expensive stuff will be if it needs any machining, i wanna flip it to get money to buy a 1g awd dsm, and this would kinda break me into the field of DSMs

- ViPER1313 - 05-20-2008

I really doubt you can get close to 3500 for that car even w/ the 16g.

I paid 2g less for my 1g AWD w/ 108k miles, and thats a much more desirable car.

- KPWSerpiente - 05-20-2008

Sure he can. He's not selling it to a dsmer. He's selling it to some kid in highschool.

CNT MGNT RETURNS! it is time for merriment and rejoicing.

edit: dierwulf and travis in the same thread? man, its just like the good old days of fwd drag racers and molded body kits!

- Ole - 05-20-2008

What is "your labor" worth? If you can't make $1k on the car after all expenses and figure what "you" are worth into that, it's not worth it. I sold a Miata last year that I did nothing to and made $2k on. All I did was drive it for 6 mos. If I had to do anywhere near what you are talking about, I wouldn't have touched it. The potential market for said car is quite thin at best, I would stay away.

You might be able to sell that property in the Everglades for $3500 after you build a house on it........deal?

- KPWSerpiente - 05-21-2008

We can't all drive fag mobiles Evan. And the good old days never left they just got a little less good.

no but seriously.....i need a DSMer input (Evan please dont spam, put some useful input please), info like.........what to expect for new crank/bearings etc etc and yes 3500 is the NADA, its in good shape and isnt riced out.......too bad

- CaptainHenreh - 05-21-2008

No, but seriously, I did this very job on my 1G. If you insist on doing it, try to find someone with a lift, it'll make your job eleventy million times easier if you want to roll new bearings in with the engine still in the car.

Listen to me carefully: If you're going to flip it, this is exactly what you should do. Drop the tcase, drop the pan, roll old bearings out, roll new ones in, slap 4 Sale sign on it. I got my bearings for free, so I can't speak to cost, but it *should* be less than 100 bucks for the set.

Once it runs without knocking, sell it and try to sleep at night.

Fixed that for you.

Someone needs a punctuation usage lesson.

- DierwulfBL - 05-21-2008

please dont spam my thread (Rgay), and thank you Rex (i think thats your name capt henreh) its FWD so yea i figured i could swap the bearings with the motor still in the car. But seriously if i waste 100 hours doin this, make 1000 bucks, that's worth it to me. But it wont take 100 hours so yea its more than worth it. But i wanna pull the whole motor, to check specs, so im not screwing the potential buyer (sleep a little easier). More info needed on maybe saayyyyy a good place to get all the clearances checked in cville/central va. I may end up keeping this car also, i just need a project to waste time and money on that i won't be driving (restricted license). Soooo maybe like DJ you know someone around this area (you're from buckingham right) for good machine work

- CaptainHenreh - 05-21-2008

FWD?

Dude, set it on fire. The only good FWD dsm is a dead one. Good riddance.

Seriously, this is MM you're posting on...

It sounds like you've already bought the car and convinced yourself its worth it, so why are you asking what we would do? The trick to flipping this car will be low-balling the seller, installing the bare minimum for it to run properly, and dumping it as soon as you get a reasonable offer ($2500 would be reasonable).
However, as soon as you entertain the thought of keeping it, you can throw the 'flip' out of the question b/c you'll be fixing it for longevity, which will cost more over the course of the repair.
