Tips for Selling Privately? - Apoc - 04-09-2008

I've listed my car on CL and have gotten about a half dozen responses in the last 12 hours. I fully expect most of these people to flake, but am encouraged by the enthusiasm of 1 or 2. I've never sold a car private party (OMG NO WAI!), so I'm looking for tips to make the transaction as smooth as possible.

This is what I have so far:
-see license before a test drive
-cash or cashiers check only
-do the transaction at my bank
-hand over the car when paid
-hold the title until check clears

I know I'm forgetting something big, what is it?

Go with them for the test drive is usually on my list.

you can get the best price by selling to nigerians. they have a guy who comes and picks up the car and everything, no haggling.

First of all, do the transaction at a bank. That way you can have everything cleared before signing it away. Also everything is witnessed by a bank, so pretty much if he tries something fishy, hes fucked.

Got a link to your CL ad? I want to forward it to my buddy who's in the market.

That's exactly what I did!

yep. i wouldn't trust anyone no matter how serious they are. especially with an S4omg2turbos6klaunchyo

my worst nightmare would be some kid coming with their mom/dad to check the car out. in that case, put your seatbelt on

Write up a Bill of Sale and have them sign a copy and you sign a copy. You might be able to find a template on DMV's site (or just google for one).

I just did that but thanks for the suggestion.

Do you guys hold the title until you're sure the check clears? How long does that take?

- .RJ - 04-09-2008

Chris, I've got a bill of sale template if you want it.

Yes. Your bank can call their bank to verify the the check it legit... or you can set up a new account with your bank and ask them to do a wire transfer.

In VA, the title is the bill of sale

If the vehicle is 5 years old or newer, the DMV still needs it to verify the sale price - or else you pay book retail. Dont ask me why its not spelled out on their website... because its not, but i've run into it more than once.

Its also a good idea to have a signed document stating that no warranty is expressed or implied. Especially with an Audi Wink

Yeah mine says that... I wanted to make sure of that. Plus I need a document to state deposit, should we go that route.

The car is older than 5 years. I guess I can use the DoS at deposit time and then take the title with me to the bank if he's paying by check.

If it's a personal check, it can take up to 2 months. So like everyone said, make sure you call / go to the bank to make sure the check is legit.

- G.Irish - 04-09-2008

I wouldn't accept personal checks period. Bank checks or cash only.

- Maengelito - 04-09-2008

and if you do get a fat stack of cash as payment, please use it to spell out something humorous about RJ's sexuality
