Holy Crap! Earnhardt Jr. crashes Vette, BIG FIRE! - G.Irish - 07-18-2004

Apparently he got away with minor burns but that was one hell of a fire!

- Feersty - 07-18-2004

Damn, you can see the fuel splashing around the camera after the impact.

- BLINGMW - 07-18-2004

oh. yeah. Aparently they cut into the Speed WC race, which I MISSED... but it sounds like it went well:

"No. 36 Clay stalls at the start and teammate No. 37 Richmond hits Clay from behind. No. 38 (Seth, the 3rd BW driver) hits No. 37 from behind and flips car upside-down. YELLOW FLAG. Richmond is out of the car and raises his hands to the crowd. No. 38 is off at two with car damage."

And it doesn't look like any of them started in today's race. Confusedhock:

upside down? wtf!

- ScottyB - 07-18-2004

link's dead Sad

- BLINGMW - 07-18-2004

ah ok. They broadcasted race 5 today live from CA, with Matt driving James' car and Seth was in as well. Both finished in the teens and got some camera time. I missed, AGAIN, a replay of yesterday's start when they came back from a commercial and had a little montage to music thing going. Fortunatly, it looks like Speed has decided to start supporting their own series just a little bit more and it'll be rebroadcast next weekend. ....where I will again miss it on my aniversary weekend.

That 'vette crash (somewhat more relevant to the thread) was nuts though... I thought that was the whole point of a fuel cell, to prevent that kind of thing! The amount of fuel sloshed out there seemed pretty rediculous.

Yea I saw clay - Seantn1k - 07-19-2004

I saw clay on speedvision yesterday, he flipped within the first 15 seconds of the race. As soon as he flipped he got out, stood on top of the upside down car, and threw the thumbs up with a cheer.

bahahaha... we need to do some crewing with those fellas sometime soon.

- JackoliciousLegs - 07-19-2004

lol... keep that yellow flag going when a car is EXPLODING in the middle of the track... lol.

LOL I was thinking the same thing, but then again I'm sure they're a bit more used to handling things like that without needing a red flag than we are.

- Feersty - 07-19-2004

I am glad cornerworkers were on the ball even if they waving the wrong flag, and cars were continuing to pass Junior.

- .RJ - 07-19-2004

Wrong flag?

They were probably under direction of race control when to throw the red flag. You dont pull that out on a whim.

At least they werent sleeping.

Red flag for a fire at a NASA event is acceptable as long as like the driver isn't getting out or if there is a serious collision.

For professional stuff they really need a good reason to throw it.

*zing*

- JackoliciousLegs - 07-20-2004

there was a ball of fire that was partially on track with a driver jumping out... I think that should be plenty reason...

Nope, I'd say full course black. But again, this is a professional racing event. For NASA, red flag.

You think?

Again, not up to the corner worker. They are F&C, which stands for Flagging and Communications.
