Jailbreaking iPhone / iPod Touch. Anybody done it? - WRXtranceformed - 02-17-2008

I did a little bit of reading on it but I was curious if any of you guys have tried this. Supposedly you can do a lot of cool stuff by hacking into the iPhone / iPod Touch. What have you guys been able to do? There are so many things layout wise and functionality wise that I hate about the Touch, so if JBing it can allow me to fix those things I might give it a shot.

Deersty mentioned that he can with the phone. I have a buddy that did the iPod touch.. pm men if you want his contact info.

It's SUUUUPER easy. I've done it to mine a few times (with different firmware versions). They just released a one step process that seems to be more failsafe than any others. They used to require you to downgrade iTunes, your ip/ipt firmware, mess with the command line a lot.. etc. Now, it's just this:

Oh, and as far as cool things to do with it, you can rearrange your icons for sure, but that comes with 1.1.3. You can add games. (Labyrinth is my favorite). Add SSH if you're a supergeek like me. etc. etc.

Text editor???? Is that an option?

- WRXtranceformed - 02-19-2008

Is there any way I can add WinAmp to it instead of piece of shit iTunes???

- JackoliciousLegs - 02-19-2008

Text editor, yes. Winamp... um....

- mrbaggio - 02-20-2008

Is there a central site with the apps that others are offering up for the iphone/touch?

- JackoliciousLegs - 02-20-2008

There are repositories of software in different places. Each one mostly carries different things too. Jailbreak.app browses them from the ip/t.

Uhhh... easily translated... when you jailbreak it and get installer.app on it, you use that program to browse what software is available, install it, update it, and uninstall it (if you don't want it anymore). I've never tried to browse repositories off of my ip.

- mrbaggio - 02-20-2008

I see. So you are really doing it all on the ip/t? I don't have either right now, but if I knew what I "could" do/get I might hasten the purchase.

- JackoliciousLegs - 02-20-2008

Yeah, once you jailbreak it, you do all the installing via installer.app

It has a LOT more packages than that now. Hundreds easily. Everything from running a webserver on your ip/t to playing a guitar hero clone to accelerometer based games to an NES emulator.

- mrbaggio - 02-20-2008

This was all done without the SDK right? That has yet to be released? What do you think will happen after the SDK is out? More apps? Easier to install?

- JackoliciousLegs - 02-21-2008

What I know:
They could (probably will) charge for apps.
All apps will have to be Apple approved.
Delivered via iTunes

Most likely:
Not have full admin access to phone like some current apps have
Not be given access to lots of core functionality
Have larger corporations in on the app development (BBC already pre-announced an iPlayer for those with wifi)

I'm sure there'll be cool stuff released with the official sdk... flash for safari is what i'm hoping for. If you want to customized the shit out of your phone now though, hack it up. I just have mine look like leopard.. and i've got a few games installed. That's about it.

edit... found my new favorite theme

I also read that ATT will be speeding up there data network. Can the current iphones take advantage of that new network speed if and when it comes?

- JackoliciousLegs - 02-21-2008

Att already has 3G. I doubt the current iphones can take advantage of any new advances in that realm. Wait for the coveted 3G iphone if you're worried about speed.

- mrbaggio - 02-21-2008

I am sold on the iphone. I am thinking I will wait for the next 3G phones to be released then scoop one.

- JackoliciousLegs - 02-26-2008

I see unlocked iPhones going for $500. I'll unlock mine, then sell it when the 3Gs come out.

- mrbaggio - 02-26-2008

My searches only turned up 2008 as a release date for 3Gs. Do you have anything more specific?

I don't know that jailbroken ones will be worth that much more than regular ones once Apple releases the SDK...but that depends a bit on how they do their licensing, and who they allow to install apps, etc.
