NASA-NE @ The Glen, September 15-16 - Mike - 02-08-2008

Let's get the ball rolling on this sucker. The only reason I haven't gone in the past is cause nobody else wants to go. Let's get a serious crew together, and do this somonabitch right!

312 miles from arlington
373 miles from h'burg

really not that far. heck, closer than cmp for us nova folks (by 2 hours)!

- Apoc - 02-08-2008

For those not sure if they really want to go, consider this...

It's only 5 hours to get there up 15, which is a pretty nice drive.
The area around the track is actually really nice and worth seeing.
The average temp that time of year is ~70┬░.
They have garages if the weather is crappy.

...and perhaps most importantly...

The Glen is an amazing track to drive.

- Mike - 02-08-2008

yeah, i plan on heading up and/or staying an extra day or two just to see some sights.

- Apoc - 02-08-2008

I would go to instruct if it wasn't during the week 'cause I'll have 0 vacation days left after August.

It's actually one of the better places to take a female counterpart.

and its nasa so you will get approximately 22 minutes of track time the whole weekend Wink

- Sijray21 - 02-08-2008

although this is still really far away since it is during the week i have to make sure that the project i will be on during that time isn't going through a critical time period (basically reserving the dates that far in advance still doesn't matter for the leave getting approved Sad )

i definitely want to go though!

i'll have a better idea if i can go in a few months

There are no races that weekend so it will probably be more like 27.

- D_Eclipse9916 - 02-08-2008

I am interested!

- ViPER1313 - 02-08-2008

So am I - I'm just scared to death that if I wreck / break the car while in NY that I will be screwed.

- Maengelito - 02-08-2008

i'm definitely interested, i just gotta be sure that nothings goin on for work. also, i've never driven it, so i'm not sure i'd wanna instruct. for those that have been there, is it a difficult track to pick up?

- Apoc - 02-08-2008

Maengelito Wrote:for those that have been there, is it a difficult track to pick up?

I think it's kinda overwhelming. The line itself is actually really easy with only 1 tricky turn but it's so unlike any other track that you feel lost your first 2-3 sessions.

as i said, it's just about the same distance as VIR.

- Mike - 02-08-2008

oh and i don't know why i listed myself as instructing. i'll likely run group 4, but not teach.

maeng, experience instructing your first time at a new track?

- Maengelito - 02-08-2008

Mike Wrote:maeng, experience instructing your first time at a new track?

are you asking if i have done it before? yeah the first time i drove shenandoah, i was instructing. that was an interesting weekend

- Mike - 02-08-2008

recommend against it?

- Maengelito - 02-08-2008

not necessarily. you can pick up a lot of little tricks and landmarks just by doing research from those who have driven it and plenty have driven the glen. the first few sessions it was a bit hairy because you just need to get used to the way things are linked but car control is still car control, no matter what track you're on. while i havent looked into the glen yet, i imagine its something i could probably have a decent understanding of by the end of sat/beginning of sun. i may not be as fast or smooth as i am at familiar tracks, but you'll still be faster and smoother than your students.

- Andy - 02-08-2008

Well. Here's my two cents since no one asked for it. When a student pays for an instructor, he shouldn't have to learn the track with an instructor. Granted all of Maeng's points are valid, it strikes me as a little unethical to have another person subsidize your learning curve. I don't see a problem paying for a track weekend on occasion.

i completely agree that if a student is paying to be taught, they should have someone that has a full understanding of what they're teaching. however, 1st session on saturday, you're not expecting the student to learn everything in that 25 minutes. you'll be lucky to get 5 laps in, let alone laps without traffic. in my particular situation, i had heard a lot of banter back and forth about "shenandoah is so hard and shenandoah isnt as hard as everyone says it is." its a very slow track, albeit technical, but not hard to pick up. i never felt like my student was off the pace of a normal learning curve because you really teach the basics at first to truly green students. but the concept of it i agree with andy.
