VA car tax issues - Kaan - 01-31-2008

SO... in 2006 i moved out of Prince William County. They know i moved out. I thought i might owe FFx money, and i need to renew the tags, so I called them and they have no record of my car being registered in FFx. I have the registration that has my current FFx address.

Should i man up and go to FFX and tell them there is some mistake and i owe them taxes because the car has been registered there since 2006... Or should i keep the car off the radar? There is no hold at the DMV because of taxes, i could plate and register it... assuming i pass emissions.

Pay now or pay later.

- Kaan - 01-31-2008

how are they going to find out?

- Ginger - 01-31-2008

I'm in the middle of a similar issue... they had no record of ANY of my vehicles! I worked with them for about an hour, providing dates, car makes, etc. and they said they'd get back to me sometime that week because it was "too complicated" to do right away and it would have to be referred to a senior employee. Well, that was, uhm, back in October. That place is an absolute train wreck.

They'll find out eventually in a record review or something. It's better to pay now than to pay later with all their late fees, interest, etc.

See i dont think i need to pay any fees other than the taxes. I did my part, i registered the car, changed my addresses all in a timely manner. They never sent me a bill, so i never paid a bill. Is it my fault they didnt keep things straight? I hear way too many stories from people about how FFx screwed up their car tax stuff when moving into the county... they need to fix the system that is broken and not charge the people for doing the right thing.

- Ginger - 01-31-2008

Did you send Fairfax county a formal notice within 60 days of moving into the county?

- Kaan - 01-31-2008

I changed it all over online... about 5 mintues after i did my motorcycle... which they have record of btw. and they did bill me for my motorcycle.

- Ginger - 01-31-2008

OK - well, saying "I shouldn't be responsible for late payment because they never sent me a bill" is like saying you don't owe money to Visa or Mastercard because your bill never came... it doesn't work that way. You know you owe them money and if it doesn't roll around, you need to contact them - or pay later. It's not a get out of jail free card, though.

- Kaan - 01-31-2008

Its not like a CC payment. Because to straighten it out, you have to take time off work, drive to Gods country to get to their office... and you have to wait around forever. Wink

Its not my fault that i did everything asked of me by the state, but the states system is so flawed that they have no record this car resides in FFx. Dont penalize me from their shitty system.

- Ginger - 01-31-2008

LOL - well, it does suck, but I don't think they're gonna say "aw shucks, faggedahboutit, it's free today!" just 'cause you're mad Wink

- Kaan - 01-31-2008

i'll pay my taxes, but i'm not paying late fees and shit because of their mistake. that leaves the power with the government to make as many mistakes as they want and collect from you whenever they figure it out.

- Andy - 01-31-2008

Don't do it. The gov't fucks up but it nevers forgets its money.

- Kaan - 01-31-2008

I"ll pay my damn taxes but i'm going to bitch and moan about the fees.

- Kaan - 01-31-2008

It looks like a $30 a year fee, +$20 if they put a DMV hold on it, which i doubt they did since i could register the car right now... +10% of the taxes... so it might not be to bad.

- Kaan - 01-31-2008

well the reason the state couldnt "find" me... well it was because they had my social incorrect in their system... so they waved the fees and i just had to pay my taxes + 10%... i'll take it as a win.

You guys have to wait in long lines at the DMV? How odd, I've never been in a DMV with more than about 5 or 6 other people.

You need to get north of Harrisonburg then.

NOVA DMVs are a complete disaster in terms of wait times, but the one I usually went to in Leesburg was pretty orderly and got people through as fast as they could. NC DMVs are far worse...the Charlotte one is like in the ghetto and you HAVE to get there mad early or you're waiting for 4+ hours. Their facility is also REALLY ghetto (it's in a strip mall next to a crappy grocery store) and way understaffed for how many people are there. I think they had 1 teller when I went there with a line of about 75-100 people.

Harrisonburg DMV is the busiest DMV I've ever been in. The one in my home town is massive and there is never anyone there. My brother has told me the woes of the one in Charlotte.

- Kaan - 02-01-2008

the car passed emissions... Smile that means i'm going to the DMV tomorrow... if i wait till monday i can go to the one in the pentagon and not wait in the line... but i must have vTAK! Wink
