Need some advice. - NTIman - 01-27-2008

My girlfriend is not the best driver in the world, shes been in a few wrecks, and I worry about her driving a lot.

Any suggestions on any classes she could take to boost her confidence (and skill) any?

My advice? Keep your pimp hand strong. Lol, really though, what about an auto-X to help with some coordination and vehicle dynamics?

- NTIman - 01-27-2008

I was kind of leaning the same way with the auto-x thing, i just wanted to see if anyone had any other opinions.

I think the auto-x would help out quite a bit, and it was be an affordable way to go.

Thanks Chad, sounds like exactly what I'm looking for.

Any DMV-approved driver's safety course would work, you can probably call up the VA DMV or go on their website to find some info. Plus, she gets some of her bad points taken off of her record if she does it voluntarily (and hasn't already been court ordered to take it ha)

I don't know...but is there a certain time of day I should avoid "Weems Lane" ?

- NTIman - 01-28-2008

LOL

If you're worried about her, its all good, she lives in Richmond.

Other than that Weems Lane can occasionally be bad from 8-5 when I decide to take a customer's car on test drives.

Nah, I don't think she's a horrible driver or anything, but at this point she's a little timid.

She has already been to a couple DMV classes already, so I'm really looking for something a little more involved.

This seems to be something similar to what you are looking for and the events are held at VIR:

I really don't know much about it but I figured I'd at least throw it out there.

I'll keep my eye out for airborn FJ Cruisers 8)

If she comes up this way, BSR at Summit Point has accident avoidance and other safety related courses.

thanks guys, i really appreciate the help, all of your suggestions are great.

i just need to make sure she goes to one of these.

I think I'm going to try to get her into one of the defensive driving style courses first, and eventually try to get her out to an auto-x after shes built up a little confidence. It would work out great, she becomes a better driver, and I'll get her to come to some sort of motorsports events.

trade her the keys for a frying pan... Wink just keep her bare foot and in the kitchen. /duck /hide

before the ladies of MM pour gas on me and flick matches in my general direction... maybe the ladies need to get together for some bonding time. "go fast crack pipe addicts significant others" meeting... Wink

Damnit Kaan! See if I ever fix dinner for you again.

- Kaan - 01-28-2008

i was joking julie... sheesh! Smile but i do think the ladies of MM should get together... i'm sure some of us "boys" can be hard to deal with at times.

while thats not a bad idea, lets be honest. i consider myself to be a good driver but the state of virginia might not think so. i've had to take driver's ed courses and i didnt really learn much from them because i'm not 15 anymore. i might've picked up a tidbit here and there, but nothing really significant from any DMV mandated course.

as far as classes behind the wheel or an autox, well that could be a mixed bag. it could become a situation where she thinks that since she took this defensive driving course or she went around some cones in an autox without hitting any and not spinning a car, that she's now automatically the next mario andretti. i've heard it said before and i'm not sure how true it is but its happened to me: after your first hpde or two, you will get into an accident or get a speeding ticket in the next year because you think you know a lot more than you really do. i guess i'm trying to say that moving a 4000 lbs object at 50 mph in a delicate manner isnt something you pick up in 1 weekend. she's gotta do a whole bunch of stuff consistently to really improve herself out there. so it'd be a great start and i definitely encourage her taking the initiative to improve herself, but lets not expect instant results after one class. just keep at it and bring her to various events and have her talk to people to really get a feel for how difficult it is to control a car. i'm sure we'll be at some blue ridge scca autox events this upcoming year.

Yeah, I don't expect anyone to learn much after a couple classes, but it definately can't hurt.

I'm actually considering doing some of this stuff myself, since I know I'm not the best driver ever.
