Rolex 24 - Feersty - 01-27-2008

How do young guys like Joey Hand get into this race. Can a country bumpkin from WV race in this Race if he has the skill? Or is it all richboys?

- G.Irish - 01-27-2008

It depends. There are a few guys who came up through club racing or karting who now get paid rides in series like Grand Am. Patrick Long was a karter who got his big break through the Red Bull Driver Search. Both Guy Cosmo and Raphael Matos won the Formula Mazda championship. I wanna say Joey Hand came up through the karting ladder and did some open wheel stuff.

A lot of guys racing in Grand Am are rich guys paying for seats but I'd say in the Daytona 24 more of those guys are professional drivers.

Matos turned down a 2 million dollar pay check from Star Mazda to jump over to IRL's feed series. Crazy.

- Evan - 01-27-2008

karting "ladder" and open wheel stuff still = $$$$$$$$

Barber Pro, Star Mazda, Formula Atlantic are all extremely expensive, and no one is paying their way with sponsorships.

- G.Irish - 01-27-2008

Yeah any way you slice it you're gonna need a good deal of money to get started. By the time you're running shifter karts at a national level you're probably going to be spending $25k-$40k a season. But that's a lot cheaper than trying to get into pro racing through tin tops. The open wheel feeder series tend to be hideously expensive but a couple of them have scholarship programs and what not.

His boss is into racing (he was the one with the yellow/blue civic HF shopping cart a while ago). I think he got the hook-up that way. Either way, i'm jealous :-P

boobies can probably explain more

yeah I was invited with my boss and his son (one of my good friends from high school). It was a really amazing time and we had some perks such as the champion's club which is center of the in-field and looks out over the whole track. GRM also had a tent and their Spec E30 on display. I also saw the orange/brownish Saab they have been building for rally events.

For anyone interested I have over 200 pictures here to view:
