i got an all stock 04 wrx,wanna modify something,where shoul - pengmao - 01-19-2008
well, i just want some more hp, about 250--300
but i dont know what should i modify, from air intake system begin? or exhaust system?
and someone told me do not modify air intake system. i dont know, im not professional..
anybody can help me??give me some suggestions?

First off, welcome to MM.
My first piece of advice would be to perform any maintenance on the car that needs / should be done considering it is 4 years old (fluids, belts, whatever it needs.) Having a car with a monster turbo that wont move due to a broken differential or timing belt (if Subarus even have timing belts ? ) is not much fun at all.
From there I would look at upgrading the car's suspension, brakes, and tires. The car already has 220+ hp, and while having a super fast car that cant turn is fun in a straight line, having a car that can eat up a road is a lot more fun. Swapping sway bars / springs / brakes from an STI might be a good choice.
Once you feel comfortable with the car's handling you should start adding power. Standard mods you should look into include a larger turbo down-pipe and some sort of tuning chip. Don't go overboard and buy a larger turbo before you are sure that the injectors, fuel pump and computer are up to the task. You should also invest in a wide-band 02 meter BEFORE adding any significant power to a turbo car - most blown engines result from poor tuning.

I'm going to concur with Adam here, and say that when it comes to your WRX, the easiest way to make it faster at this point is suspension work. Wheels/tires (especially tires) shocks and springs (a nice coilover setup if you've got the money) and front and rear antirollbars.
After that, I'd do a catalytic-converter back exhaust, an intake of some kind (look at NAISOC to see what those guys are doing) and a chip. A new turbo would probably be the last thing I get. No point in getting a new one until you've maxed out your old one.

Leave the intake alone, the stock one is good for up to 300whp. Turboback exhaust, some kind of engine management (UTEC, ECUTek, Accessport) and a custom tune should get you to where you want to be. Unless you're talking about 300 wheel horsepower, then you're going to need to upgrade the fuel pump, intercooler, injectors, engine management, exhuast and turbocharger.

I had an 02 WRX, got it shortly after they came out.
The biggest fun for the buck is IMO an up-pipe and downpipe (or full exhaust). Turbo spool and throttle response is MUCH faster, by about 1000 RPM.
after that, there are the many "staged" kits like TurboXS or Cobb that add a piggyback chip and more boost that will get you to 250+ without breaking the bank too much.
That car has a decent suspension for street stuff, and if you are in WI you probably want to keep some ground clearance for snow anyway.
Some cusco (or whiteline) swaybars would make the car rotate much better though.
