So a drunk driver hit my truck... - Ryan T - 01-17-2008

Well, as most of you know I have/had a 94 Dodge Ram 1500 that was left to me by my father when he passed away in 2001. I love this truck exponentionally more than my supra and took as good of care of it as I could. Anyways I had it parked about 12 spots in at squire hill (where I live) while I went home for a few days to change the starter on the supra. I get a call while I'm on my way back to the burg from DJ saying someone slammed into my truck and 3 or 4 other cars. Instant devastation. I had about 200 miles to calm myself down and I thought I'd be good, but as soon as I saw the truck I broke down, couldn't take it.

Aparently he came flying into the lot about 2am at what we estimate to be in excess of 35-40mph in a ford ranger and fishtailed into an explorer which then forced the front end to come around and clip one car, then a civic, and then hit full force into my truck forcing it over about 8 feet and pushing a kia suv completely out of it's spot and into an almost parallel position. He then parked his truck and went to his apartment. The girls who live by the parking lot and drove two of the cars called the cops and they came and took pictures, then waited up all night till he came back to his truck and called the cops again. Another officer came out while he was there and gave him several ciations. In retrospect I'm glad I wasn't here when it happened because it might have turned more sour than it already has. Anyways, here are a few pictures of the damage. It jsut amazes me that a small pickup truck like that could strike 3 other cars and still hit my fullsize pickup with enough force to push another mid-size suv out of a spot.

Damn, Thayer, I'm really sorry to hear that! I hope the judge is feeling vindictive the day he goes to court. Drunk driving is a really screwed up thing to be doing.

The pics are red X's to me (maybe b/c I'm at work)... but how bad is it? Do you think they'll give you enough to fix it?

I hope he gets the book thrown at him, but unfortunately you can ask Dave and Lindsey how vindicated they were when they were hit by a drunk driver. Nothing in this world irritates me more than people who think they are invincible and don't care who or what they hurt.

Ryan, I am so sorry for the loss of your truck, because unfortunately nothing will ever replace it.

- Ryan T - 01-17-2008

Andrew, try it now, I changed who I hosted the pics with. I think the insurance company will total the truck, it's book value isn't very high simply because of age. We are going to buy the truck back from the insurance regardless and either try to fix it or part it out, whichever one we can. We hope to be able to get it fixed, but we'll have to wait and see how extensive the damage is. The truck did start (didn't even throw a check engine light!) and we were able to move it over into one spot, but that's all we've done so far.

WHOA.

geez man i've never seen a car demolish a parking lot like that. i'm really sorry to see something you value like that be so trashed. glad you're OK though. you seem to be a magnet for this stuff (VW rear ended...)

That's great those girls took care of getting the cops there at the right time, and hopefully he'll have his ass handed to him on a plate for what he did. could have happened on the road..... Confusedhock:

- JackoliciousLegs - 01-17-2008

I'm sorry man. That's awful. Just remember, you weren't in the car when it happened.

- Ginger - 01-17-2008

Oh my god (translation: the pics work now). That's some intense damage! I forgot to really ask in the first post, but I guess you've already determined that The Drunk does actually have insurance.

I guess it does look like a write off (that's a shame, too; this is the first time I've seen the truck and it's really good looking). If you need a hand fixing it, let us know; I'd love to help and I'm sure everybody else would be willing to lend a wrench, too.

- Jeff - 01-17-2008

Man that's a flesh wound. Doesn't look like it got the frame at all. Did it bust the radiator? We'll fix it. I'll give you all the help I can.

- Ryan T - 01-17-2008

I appreciate the kind words guys. It did bust the radiator. The guy does have insurance. We are buying it back if it is totaled and hopefully repairing it.

- HAULN-SS - 01-17-2008

so i take it the guy was not trying to man up after doing it? I don't know how he'd even think he was going to get away after seeing hte amount of damage on his own truck

and parking too? Wow. He needs a darwin award.

Good luck with the truck, sorry man!

- Steve85 - 01-17-2008

Damn, Ryan so sorry to see that.

I really hope it does not get totalled for ya. If it does, start a project thread and we can help you get it fixed.

- Maengelito - 01-17-2008

saw the facebook pics, but damn! sorry to hear it thayer. what did the cops end up charging the douchebag with?

- Nis01 - 01-17-2008

Confusedhock: Holy crap Thayer. Sorry to hear about the truck man. Thats horrible to see the carnage that incident caused. I'm amazed he could actually still get out and walk anywhere. Glad you alright.

- Sijray21 - 01-18-2008

i'm so sorry to hear about this Thayer Sad

good luck with the insurance claim and i hope everything gets settled ok for everyone.

- CaptainHenreh - 01-18-2008

Damn.

You know, I'm still trying to piece together what, exactly, happened.

He came down, scraped the civic and then...hit your truck, pushed your truck into the kia. But I still am trying to figure out how your truck got so fucked up and his truck looks, well, not nearly so fucked up. Did he get out with a sledgehammer and start wailing on it?

Weird. And shitty.

I would probably have beat him within an inch of his life before the cops got there had I seen it.

Drunkass:"He beat me up!"
Cops: "Did you assault him?"
Thayer:"I don't know WTF you're talking about, this dude's drunk. He must have fell down and landed on his nuts, and that's why they're swollen and bleeding."
Cops:"Yeah, that looks about right."

- Feersty - 01-18-2008

Sucks man. Did he get a DUI?

- Goodspeed - 01-19-2008

Perhaps someone with better legal knowledge can help out, but what exactly does "attended property" mean? I'm guessing it refers to property (house, car, etc) containing a person(s) at the time of an accident?

Apparently the guy hit the vehicles, then drove away and parked/went into his apartment (fleeing the scene). Well, according to the 2007 Virginia Crime Code listings, a hit and run accident involving damage over $250 carries a maximum 12 month jail sentence (HIT-6610-M1), while the same incident involving "attended property" with damages totaling 1k or more carries a 1-10 year jail sentence (HIT-6604-F5), all of this not including the DUI charge/factor.

So hopefully this d-bag goes away for a long time.

- Evan - 01-19-2008

I think "attended" means someone was in the car/property.

The 1-10 years thing sounds to me more like if someone is injured though.

- Kaan - 01-19-2008

estimated 35-40mph? i dont think so... i was rear ended in my crx by someone at that speed and it did MUCH less damage to a POS honda.
