The MM Forum, and, I'll see ya later. - PDenbigh - 01-16-2008

It's probably not necessary to make a post about this, but on the slight chance it might make a point, I'm going for it.

When I joined in early 2004, The MM forum was a really cool, fun place. Things stayed light and positive, centered around motorsports, and was usually updated with interesting and useful info.

Over the past 6+ months though, the forum and its topics, conversations, language, and overall feel has plummeted. There are more arguments for argument's sake than I care to waste time on while looking for something worthwhile. A quick glance at "The lounge" has fewer topics about motorsports than it does about everything else.

So, I'm signing off. Maybe in someday the culture will make a comeback, but it's just a worthless place for me right now.

If anyone needs something from me, PM or shoot me an email - peter at 85xr.com. I also sign on AIM sometimes, add BikeNHop or my work AIM is PDenbigh. Hopefully I'll see some of ya at the track if I ever get the XR track-worthy again ;-).

Peter

Though guilty of arguing on here for aguings sake, I have to agree with you Pete, and as a matter of fact, Rex and I were just talking about this same topic yesterday. So I guess we'll be seeing you at the track.

- Mike - 01-16-2008

 I totally hear ya, which is why my posting rate has dropped to MAYBE one per day. Anyway, it was inevitable that the forum would become this... Not sure what could have been differently.

A good summary of what I'm seeing is that the signal to noise ratio has dropped off the face of the planet.

- mrbaggio - 01-16-2008

See ya Pete.

Am I the only one that likes the constant bitching? I think it is really funny. It is almost the only reason I come to this site anymore.

- BLAIR - 01-16-2008

agreed.. I was actually half tempted to make a comment today about how much stupid BS and wastefull junk is going on here. I cant imagine what anyone that doesnt know people here would think if they just read any of this garbage.

While i will still continue to read ( usefull ) post on this forums, I have found myself avoiding it more and more lately.

hate to see you go.. goodluck with the car

I sure hope so.

- Goodspeed - 01-16-2008

Pete, I wholeheartedly agree. Make sure you stop by our local events though, I'd hate to see you go for good, and hopefully we'll be seeing you at the auto-x and track events.

In my opinion, the forum has gone to complete waste; while we're still having a blast with MM between the people and events, I no longer personally advise people to check it out. For the same reasons mentioned above my posting has slowed drastically.

I for one would fully support the removal of the "lounge" forum.

I can't be. The Jerry Springer Show is very popular.

- HAULN-SS - 01-16-2008

Confusedhrug: I see 13 threads relating to automotive news and inquiries on the first page of the lounge threads. Not racing, per se, but close enough for "Off Topic, Anything goes..complete madness"

Agreed. Have fun Pete! Hopefully see you out there on track, youve got my number if you need any help with the XR or want to join us for a good ole enduro kart challenge.

Right, because this, clearly is the answer.

Instead of encouraging people to join the forums, to participate, to get people interested and enthused (which would reduce the fighting and bitching considerably) the answer is, of course, to abandon it.

Excellent idea, Goodspeed!

It is this attitude by both alumni and current students that has lead to the forum being in such a state in the first place.

The reason so much drama happens is because people are bored. And, though it may suck, it is partially the current leadership's responsibility to at least attempt to remedy it.

There used to be project threads, discussion, etc. Now we get to hear about DJ's DSM when it breaks. There used to be discussion about track events, autocrosses, stuff like that, now we *might* get a picture of goodspeed's funny tape smiley on his hood, and god forbid any actual pictures or stories from the track.

So if you want to take the lazy way out and go "Oh, well, people on the forum are bored and nipping at each other for entertainment, let's just let 'er eat and get on." then fine.

But don't pretend like you aren't part of the problem.

- Goodspeed - 01-16-2008

Rex, response via PM.

- ViPER1313 - 01-16-2008

First off, at this moment there is currently no webmaster for the club (unless Goodspeed/Justin/Jeff is doing it, IDK.) I have been watching all this stuff go down and not done a thing - seems like every time myself or someone else tries to lay down some forum law they get mocked and nothing much changes. I have suggested setting up some guidelines for appropriate / inappropriate conduct to the same end - lots of whining and mockery.

For the people over the past week who have been arguing / whining / insulting non stop, you know who you are. I'm not 100% innocent, although I would like to think I have been a lot less offensive than most.

- WRXtranceformed - 01-16-2008

Oh man, this Great Hate is forcing people into retirement just like the last... maybe I underestimated its awesome power.

In all seriousness, I'm fine with the way it's been. Not to fan the fire any more, but a lot of the people who are complaining about it are the ones who start the nonsense a lot of times in the first place.

You want to see a shit show, go to the Parking Lot of the IS forums....talk about bad language, way off-topics and completely inappropriate and offensive humor!

BLAIR Wrote:I cant imagine what anyone that doesnt know people here would think if they just read any of this garbage.

as someone who put alot of heart into the club when i was an officer i think about that alot. it's pretty embarrassing.

i also think it's sad that some people seem to develop a personality on the forums that doesn't reflect who they really are. it's their problem of course, but it's a shame as i would never be friends with them outside of MM if i only had the forums to go off of for an idea of what they are like.

either way i respect your decision Pete, it's a shame you are leaving but i can't blame you.

well shit, I'm sick for a few days and I missed the great hate 1.1? shit somebody call me and fill me in!

nope, i still read every post when i get on. i skip over 9/10 of the threads.

your post was a prime example of why people are fed up. did it add anything? no, it was just an attempt to draw a reaction.

I very rarely +1, but I'll do it here.

You can't possibly live real life poking pinprick holes in all arguments like you do here. And I don't mean to point my frustration solely at you - moreso at the general attitude that this thread is targeted at.

Thanks, Pete.

- Ginger - 01-17-2008

I'm sorry to see you go, Pete. On the same token, though, I know exactly what you're saying.

None of us is innocent, and it's readily apparent in our collective dissatisfaction. MM has definitely changed over the past few years, and I'm not sure it's the same club I joined (or the same people, really). It doesn't have to be, of course, but it would be nice to see a change. I think a lot of us have far too much time invested in the club, our related hobbies, and the friendships we've cultivated to just walk away.
