Trunk smells like crayons... - Jake - 12-18-2007

It's mom's car, a 2005 Crossfire convertible. She asked me tonight (after spending about an hour replacing the damn headlight... snaking my hand around everything else under the hood) to open her trunk and see if I could smell whatever she had been smelling.

Apparently it's smelled like this for a few months but she hasn't thought much of it. Now it's a bit stronger. It smells like a box of Crayolas. Not too strong but it's there. She doesn't keep anything but some coupons and a hat in the trunk.

Any ideas? I know Jettas had/have a problem where the whole interior smells similar and I've heard of "the smell" happening to some BMWs as well. A German thing, maybe?

every jetta made after 2000 that i've been in has smelled that way Tongue you wont have any luck getting rid of it.

- Jake - 12-18-2007

Any idea what causes it, though? Just to clear things up, our smell is in a Crossfire.

Take the crayons out? Wink

Maybe they use recycled dumpster plastic that smells?

I know, I know. Nope, no idea what causes it. Blair could probably help more here.

check the spare tire well for pooled up water or any fabric type insulation in the trunk. if it has retained moisture, its probably the smell of old moldy funky fibers

Thanks guys... I'll have to check under the fake floor of the trunk. IIRC there's no spare tire, but I know there's a well of some sort.

Oh and in the Jetta's case, it's typically only when it is hot outside.

All German cars smell like Crayons...that's the way it is.
