Remember CHIPS? - Ginger - 12-09-2007

First, the obligatory MMoney shot:

Another bike to the collection. It's a 1998 BMW R1100RT-P. The P stands for Police. For the first three years of it's life it was a CHP bike. It's got a "Mary" number on it somewhere, just like they used to say their bikes had in the tv show. It's a really nice highway ride, the adjustable windscreen makes life nice, among other things. I've got some plans to make it more cosmetically 'right', but first it'll need a new clutch [bad].

Enjoy!

I hope you have some aviators and a 3/4 black and white helmet!

That's pretty bad-ass.

Def. needs aviators though.

Oh noes.

- ScottyB - 12-09-2007

that's 100% cool, mostly because the blue lights are still on it

i love police-turned-civilian vehicles.

CHP uses BMWs?

- Ginger - 12-10-2007

Indeed, a couple folks from CA have already commented on how well acquainted they are with the silhouette. There are a few other departments in the country that run them, too. Spotsylvania ran them for a while, but it's my understanding that the guys would rather be on Harleys. To each his own, I guess. They run on 60K/3 year contracts, whichever comes first. They're maintained by BMW shops in the area on contract, not by the motor pool loonies that take care of the squad cars. They get special goodies like 2 batteries, an 840 watt alternator, a taller final drive, a radio box that is a 'top case' now, full crash bars, BMW System 'City' side cases, etc.

It seems to be in good shape, but I won't know for sure until I start taking it apart for the clutch. I've got some plans for the bike, but nothing major. I haven't decided what to do about the blue tail lights. They're legal because they're not foward facing blue lights, but I don't want to be hassled by the Local Authority... on the other hand, the more it looks like a cop bike the more it gets you noticed. I don't necessarily want people to see me on it, but after the accident the more visible I am the more comfortable I'll be. I've also go the foward facing light pods which could be kind of cool to fit with Hella lights or something, maybe.

- Maengelito - 12-10-2007

there are a couple BMW cops in charlottesville as well. well, i should say that i've seen the BMW cops at static displays and such, but never seen them on patrol or on the roads.

See the 2 pods to the left and right of the headlight - about level with the handlebars? Normally they house red and blue lights which, obviously, I can't run. They mount up on a fairing mount on the dash that looks pretty stupid without some kind of Thing mounted to them... that's what I was talking about above... gay, or cool to mount white light Hellas or something to that effect in the pods and put them on?

- Evan - 12-10-2007

mount supertones in them

Almost forgot... it's CHiPs.

If you're gonna be impersonating them Andrew you gotta at least get the capitalization right!

- Ginger - 12-10-2007

I was thinking I'd wear really tight, short sleeve button downs and Roper gloves to go riding. I sold my aviators a while ago, guess I'll have to fix that.

- mrbaggio - 12-10-2007

You must also get a pair of mount me boots

Took me awhile but I found it!
