1989 MX-6 Turbo...should I? - drivesideways46 - 12-03-2007

So a guy on a local site has been trying to sell this car for a few months now, and finally just wants rid of it. As such, the price has dropped so low that I'm seriously interested in picking it up but I have a few concerns.

The car itself has 155k miles and the motor has never been rebuilt to any recent owners' knowledge.
Mods include:
New turbo, FMIC, boost controller, Centerforce dual friction clutch and adjustable shocks.

I was able to go out and test drive the car and was fairly impressed. The owner only admitted to an intermittent stalling problem, but the car had a few more faults when I got to actually drive it.

The car supposedly has a bad right front wheel bearing. I neither heard/or felt any evidence of this, but I only got to drive around a development because the car had dead tags. The rear brake pads need replaced, and the door handle on the driver's side will not let you into the car.

I really liked the car though, but I'm a little worried with the whole wheel bearing thing. Is it a terrible idea to try and drive this car on the interstate for 2.5 hours to get it back home? I don't have a truck and trailer, and don't really want to impose on anyone else for bringing home some junker car that they don't care about.

FWIW, I think the car could make it, but I'm hoping for more educated answers from you fine folks!

how low is low?

if you can't hear or feel the bearing i wouldn't worry about it.

will this be a project/play car or your DD?

Five hundred bucks, plus I get another set of good wheels and tires and the new Mazda catalytic converter he's got for the car.

That was another sticking point with the seller, the car has some sort of aftermarket exhaust with a test pipe and he didn't feel like putting the stock stuff back on to pass MD inspection. He said he'd also have to scrape off the tint, and just didn't feel like it was worth the hassle.

WV inspection FTW!

It would be strictly a project car until it was throughly gone over. Supposedly, it was the previous owner's daily until he found another project.

id hit it for $500 as a beater. looks like its in pretty good shape for the age.
i wouldnt put much cash in it other than fix the problems.

remember you cant do much drivesideways in fwd Wink

ps- the accordian shift boot is sooooo retro

That's kind of my feeling as well.

I'm not planning on putting this car sideways, unless it's with a nice e-brake pull.

I started using my SN almost 10 years ago when driving sideways referred to rallying! Now I just sound like some wannabe drift fag. :?

i'd hit that eight ways from sunday for 500 bucks. at the very least, if you don't like it then clean it up and flip it for another couple hundred, easy.

Except for the bird-fart turbo I guess this isn't a bad car. Decent daily driver just don't expect it to be ZOMG TURBOAMAZING!

All in all, I think the second gen Probe/MX-6 was a better car all around, but this isn't bad for 500 bucks, and it looks pretty clean. The guys on GRM said pull the trigger, and I'm gonna agree with them.

not a great deal, not a bad deal. you're going to have to get your hands dirty with something like this and the payoff isn't going to be high.

I think it sounds like a great deal. It looks like its in great shape and it sounds like a fun little beater. A well-spent $500 if you ask me.

- Maengelito - 12-04-2007

for $500, its not a bad deal. if i had to drive 2.5 hours to pay $500 and then have a questionable ride back? i'm not so sure about that.

Where in MD is this :?:
