The 911 call came from a Pasadena, Tex., resident, who alerted police to two burglary suspects on a neighbor's property. Before he hung up, two men were dead by his hand.
Joe Horn, 61, told the dispatcher what he intended to do: Walk out his front door with a shotgun.
"I've got a shotgun," Horn said, according to a tape of the 911 call. "Do you want me to stop them?"
"Nope, don't do that - ain't no property worth shooting somebody over, OK?" the dispatcher responded.
"Hurry up man, catch these guys, will you? 'Cause I'm ain't gonna let 'em go, I'm gonna be honest with you, I'm not gonna let 'em go. I'm not gonna let 'em get away with this ----."
Opinions? I'm not quite sure about this one. I think maybe death was a bit extreme.

I dont know what the typical response time in that area was, and maybe shooting someone that wasnt on your own property is a bit extreme - but good riddance to a couple of scumbags. If they'd gotten away with it they'd have probably just robbed another house. If they charged him with anything and I was on the jury I wouldnt convict him.

I didn't watch the video, but I don't really need to. Dude witnessed a robbery, waited more than 5 minutes for the authorities, then did something about it. While it would have been better if he shot them in the legs or something rather than killing them, they got what they deserved.
I'll say this, if I was in his situation, I would probably have done the exact same thing. He gave them plenty of time to respond before acting. Hell, it seemed like the dispatcher even kept playing it off as nothing big, but I bet he was thinking about "my house could be next" when he walked out the door.

i probably would have just followed them when they drove off and kept on their tail until the police could catch up, assuming they only hit that house and it was before authorities could get there.
i'm not sure i'd feel right about blowing someone away for entering someone else's home.

Seems pretty cut and dry to me despite what the texan legislator that drafted the "castle doctrine" says.
If you're allow folks to protect their property and shoot someone, you can't mandate that they not shoot to kill. That seems unfair. Either allow or not allow the use of lethal force and be done with it.
5 minutes does seem like a long response time. Maybe they were busy catching speeders?

The guy is hilarious, but did the wrong thing. Give him a month in jail to prove a point...

I don't think it's a question of law because we know stuff like that flies in Texas. I'm more curious about whether or not people here could have pulled the trigger given the circumstances.
Officers were on the scene like a minute after he shot them. I really don't think 6 minutes is that long of a response time, especially since I have no idea where this neighborhood is in relation to routine patrol.

If they were in my house, no problems. If they were in my neighbors..well, I guess it'd depend on how well I knew the neighbors, and what their situation was. If they were really old or stood a chance of being hurt..probably no problem then either.

I wouldn't shoot someone on someone else's property unless I thought someone else's safety was in danger. If they were on my property (and I lived in TX) I would have shot them no question.

I might have shot them with the .45 hollow's rather than the shotgun, depends on how many there were. I just hope he used 00 buck, sounds like he did. Good for him, fuck criminals. I don't need to listen to the tape, those people had NO right to be where they were.

So why don't we give the death penalty for robbery or breaking and entering?
If there's no eminent danger to people I don't think death is a satisfactory punishment... especially when there are 3 shots for 2 people.

I'd agree with that. I do think going to your neighbors house and shooting the robbers is a bit extreme, but if someone were robbing my house I'd want my neighbors to do the same.

I too would want my neighbors to stop them and wouldn't even mind if they did it with a gun... it just sounded like this guy had made a decision before confronting them that he was going to kill them. That's what I find just a tad bit disconcerting.
