The Homepage Battle Stage - Apoc - 10-25-2007

There's some discussion at work about what "technical" people use as their webpage (yes, it's work related and we're not just dorks discussing it for fun). Since I'd qualify most here as fairly techinical I thought an informal poll couldn't hurt.

I'm using Netvibes myself. I think the reason for a module/feed based homepage is pretty obvious but I'm guessing people will say IGoogle is better. I'm just not a fan of the way it looks and like the visual layout and customization of Netvibes better.

What are you using and why?

- .paul - 10-25-2007

igoogle, easy for all my rss feeds, gmail, weather, and hangman Tongue

- WRXtranceformed - 10-25-2007

Just the standard google search page, because it's simple and loads fast.

- white_2kgt - 10-25-2007

been using iGoogle for a few months now, mainly to track football scores, news and some rss feeds, not really married to it or any other 'homepage'. I pretty much know what I'm looking for on the 'net and where to get it.

Seems like a waste if you ask me. I mean at the least have a page with all your bookmarks or something. Then you can just middle click them to open new tabs and you're good to go.

RJ, maybe you should change yours to eharmony or something. Tongue

Me too.
It's not a waste. It's faster.

- Apoc - 10-25-2007

Faster to load that page, maybe.

Or do you use the queer bookmark toolbar?

- WRXtranceformed - 10-25-2007

I use that queer bookmark toolbar religiously! It's money for forum browsing.

Good call on the about:blank! I might have to make the switch

+1

every once in awhile, firefox defaults me to their pseudo google search page, but both are quick to load up

- mrbaggio - 10-25-2007

I actually have an address field down on my windows task bar. So I often go directly to the webpage I was going to end up at anyway.

By typing/autofill is so 1994!

and have to maintain a list of bookmarks? have to go back to my homepage every time i want to navigate to something that i think might be bookmarked?
I rarely use bookmarks anyway.

ctrl-tab goes to the URL bar
ctrl-tab-tab goes to google search box (google toolbar)

and i type faster than you can pick a bookmark out of a list

Lazy... and efficient!

They're alphabetized by category and always appear in the same place. In about 3 seconds I've got 5 sites open in their own tab.

Sounds like a Battle Stage challenge!

99% of the time when I open my browser it's because I've got a specific site in mind and I'm too important to deal with the unresponsiveness of it loading other sites while I try to navigate to my bookmark.

- Apoc - 10-25-2007

You need a job where you can keep your browser open. Wink
