You lose traction of your rear tires. There are a multitude of ways to lose traction, it's all about the friction circle.

you have to have great throttle control. It's all about feeling the car and knowing how much throttle and when to give it after you've found the aspects of the friction circle mike was talking about.

i did it in the snow with the civic with the ebrake around the isat long bend :wink:....not a good idea to do it a second time though... Confusedhock:

It's a lot easier to do in RWD b/c the most important part is to break traction with the rear tires. In FWD, this can be a bit difficult (OK, I have no idea cuz I haven't owned a FWD car for 3 years and wasn't interested at the time) but in RWD your drive wheels are what you have to break traction with, so with the proper input of throttle it can be very easy to start and continue a drift.
So far, I've found that if you put your car at a very hard turn, then give it a lot of throttle, the rear wheels will simply break loose and the pendulum effect will cause the rear to swing out (because there's no friction holding it to the ground any more), essentially trying to get the car to go straight again. That's great, except for when you give it a bit more throttle than is necessary to straighten out. The car will swing out wide and voila!, you're drifting. The kewl part is maintaining the drift, which is where the superb throttle control comes in.
Basically, drifting done correctly = controlled and graceful oversteering to an extreme. Course, its also a great way to fuck up body panels and cars, so I don't partake a whole lot.

to do it in an fwd car you either need to do some heavy trail braking, or yank the e-brake, or have a crazy suspension/tire setup that just want to slide the ass around constantly. it really is an upill battle that i honestly think cannot be won.

I got a friend that is a CS major, he has a SC 300, and has some other drifting buddies, he has kinda shown interest in the club. We although don't have a large drifting contingent.

Gotta start the "contingent" somewhere. Be sure he isn't all about street-jackassery though. A lot of drifters are that way, and it is surely something we don't want to associate our club with.

errr cage. does weight really matter though? i mean if you're doing a barrel roll at 80mph is a 1500lb car gonna take that much less damage than a 2500lb car?

It's also entertaining because little japanese men are funny. If anyone wants a copy of the DB, I have one.

I also have the first three Initial D mangas. They actually go into significant detail about the mechanics of drifting. And japanese schoolgirls.

At this point, you'll all be looking at my Sig and saying to yourself, "Self, wtf is up with Rex? He thinks Drifting is retarded, yet drives an S13, owns the drift bible, and just bought the first three Initial D mangas. I wonder what gives."
