Emissions issues! - Kaan - 09-27-2007

Ok so i didnt got the shady guy i know to get the car past emissions. I really didnt think i would need to take it there. I've never had any of the honda motors in any state of bomb prep fail emissions... so why would this one?

HC ppm: Limit= 172 Reading= 177
CO%: Limit= .69 Reading=2.00

that was all that the 15mph pull... the car passed on NO @ 15mph and passed everything at the 25mph mark... though the CO% @ 25mph passed at the limit. Any thoughts?

I thought all they did was attach something to the gas tank and go from there. They didn't put my car on a dyno when they did the emissions. I thought they stopped doing that.

if you car is new enough, they don't actually test it... it's a waste of their time. on our old piles, they sniff.

- Evan - 09-27-2007

hrm, i did the research into all the emissions troubleshooting back when a car i had failed but of course i forget now how to diagnose
some things that do help :
seafoam it
change oil
check for EGR leaks and vacuum leaks.
id go in with some higher octane fuel too just incase you are pinging

is your car burning oil?

a new cat will almost definately fix it, but that costs $

- Kaan - 09-27-2007

its already running the highest grade i can put in it from the pump... there are other ways i guess.

from what i found on the interweb ... they say its running rich and has a bad spark to get these kinds of numbers... bascially i have too much unburned fuel with a combination of a bad spark.

SO... i'll drop new plugs in it... seafoam it... change the oil... and i might cheat with that can of "you will pass emissions" shit if i feel daring enough to add that shit to my car.

its running a stock ecu from a CRX Si with a JDM 1.6L DOHC ZC... it has a new distributor on it, header, and CAI with a dirty filter (that i will try to change before i go back... i just have to find one!)

For newer cars they plug into the OBDII sensor and look for fault codes. Two or more on most newer cars and you fail. Older cars, they still do the dyno test.

seafoam prior to new plugs and oil, ive found seafoam can foul them a bit.

- Kaan - 09-27-2007

oh yeah... anyone want to come over tomorrow night or saturday morning and watch the bitch smoke?

- .RJ - 09-27-2007

Tomorrow night? In for taking pics!

- Kaan - 09-27-2007

smoke from seafom dumb dumb... not fire!

- Evan - 09-27-2007

shit i smoked the yard down last thursday night. its a regular occurence

Dirty air filter can cause an engine to run rich, usually as long as its not MAF-equipped.

Other than that, everything you said would possibly help. My guess after that would be a fuel pressure regulator, but thats kind of far fetched.

- Kaan - 09-28-2007

yeah i just pulled off the old K&N filter... fuck'n dirty! and the plugs dont look so hot... so i'm going to try to get my hands on a filter and some plugs... swap them in and let'r eat.

- Kaan - 09-29-2007

failed again at the 15mph CO levels... with new plugs and a filter... i dunno what i'm going to do right now!

- CaptainHenreh - 09-29-2007

Have you seafoamed it?

How's your timing?

seriously, put the old plugs back in, seafoam that bitch, change the oil. put the new plugs in and try again. It is truly amazing stuff. I'd probably put some octane booster in too (it's snake oil to me, but sounds like you need help from a higher power).

And if you do seafoam, be sure to change the oil immediately. Think of all the nasty shit that gets loosened up getting into your oil...

- .RJ - 09-29-2007

Octane booster = junk.

Kaan's busted pile needs a new cat. Autozone also sells some stuff marked "guaranteed to pass" that you pour in the crankcase.

- WRXtranceformed - 09-29-2007

Or buy a couple gallons of race gas to pass the test?
