Help me narrow down my car search. - Ryan T - 06-30-2004

Well, I am still considering getting another car. The LT1 is fun, but I want something different. I went and test drove a miata and while they are extremely fun and nimble, I want something a little bigger for my daily driver. Here are my requierments:

rwd or awd
decent power
decent room (bigger than a miata)
inexpensive to fix/work on.
fun to drive.

I have been looking at LS1 camaro's some lately. Give me your ideas. Smile

- Dave - 06-30-2004

a few ideas for now, more to come as I think of them
mkIII supra: yeah we both know how that goes
240sx: considering what I've done and have at the moment, I don't think I've spent much money and I think I'm going to definitely get my money's worth from it.
NA mkIV supra: can be had fairly cheap. you've ridden with me, you know that the only thing that it lacks is a pair of turbos on the passenger side of the engine, expensive if something breaks, but that is rare if you maintain it properly
SC300: same exact car as the NA mkIV except you get a trunk instead of a hatch, more leg room in rear, and wheelbase is 5 inches longer. Everything else matches right up and these go for wicked cheap.
BMW 3series: I know jack shit about these cars, but seems to match your requirements except for the inexpensive part

240.

There's a '90 in the trader for like, nothing. Smile

- Mike - 06-30-2004

325

- Evan - 06-30-2004

240

really hard to find one in good shape though

- JackoliciousLegs - 06-30-2004

can i get a price range?

- Chris - 06-30-2004

2.5 RS if you can find one in your price range, but you may want more power.

Are the SC 300's only automatic? Wouldn't they need a bit of suspension work to eliminate the lexus softness, or are they comparible to the NA supras?

- Evan - 06-30-2004

oooh good call chris. 2.5RS is a fantastic car.
I saw a 2000 on craigslist not too long ago for only $8k

- ViPER1313 - 06-30-2004

Old / newer 300ZX turbo / non-turbo?

- Evan - 06-30-2004

Ryan what are your goals for the car?

- Ryan T - 06-30-2004

The goals for my car...something that has pretty good power, is fun to drive, and will serve me well in auto-x. I want something thats not going to take a ton of money to fix/keep on the road. I will be autocrossing whatever I get, or my car should I end up having to keep it. Track use is on down the road, but not this year.

- .RJ - 06-30-2004

E30 325is would be a good cheap car. You can get a really nice example for $5K, or if you wanted to spend $8K you can get a nice E36. Most of them will be higher mileage but they're built like tanks, and the maintenance is pretty easy.

- Evan - 06-30-2004

$5k for a 15-20 year old german car with 150k miles isnt good or cheap

- .RJ - 06-30-2004

Better than a 10 year old jap car with 60K Wink

Chris Wrote:Are the SC 300's only automatic? Wouldn't they need a bit of suspension work to eliminate the lexus softness, or are they comparible to the NA supras?
There are manual SCs available, but a little harder to come by. Yeah, the Lexus is a bit softer, but I happen to have all my stock shocks/springs that I'd be happy to loan/sell for cheap, not to mention that the upgrades are available to make it right on par with my supra

- Evan - 07-01-2004

SC300 is a great comfy cruiser, but it doesnt seem to fit well with Ryan's goals.

Ryan what is wrong with the Camaro? Seems like it already meets your needs, its a great autoX car and track car (despite what the honduh ricers say!)

- Evan - 07-02-2004

check this out
http://washingtondc.craigslist.org/car/35166652.html
for only $1100, you could afford to keep the camEro too! :p

- Ryan T - 07-02-2004

I like RX-7's. Smile may have to look into that.

- .RJ - 07-02-2004

2nd (or 3rd) gen RX-7 with unknown history = time bomb

- Ryan T - 07-02-2004

I called the guy about that rx-7. The picture isn't actually the car. The car doesn't have the exhaust or the rims. It has 186k miles and needs the a/c worked on.

Still not a bad price, but seems like the car may end up being more trouble than I'd like.
