I posted this up on another forum because I was bored, but it's kinda fun and I'm curious what you guys would do for track cars with a set budget.

So I'm bored at work, nobody is coming in today because of the holiday tomorrow... and I got to daydreaming about what my ideal track car would be. I wanted to set a limit for myself just to be realistic, so let's put a total invested amount out there of $50,000. Probably a lot of us could afford to throw more money into it, but I think that's a good limit so that you don't go out of control with crazy carbon fiber body panels or anything like that :wink:

So, you have $50,000 to spend on any car plus any setup for it for any type of racing.... what would you do???

My picks:
STRIP
I'd try to find an old muscle car chassis like a classic 'Stang of come kind, fix up the exterior myself, beef up the drivetrain, auto tranny with a high stall, all the suspension goodies needed to get it to hook, slicks, stripped out completely and caged, no AC or any of that garbage and do some kind of built, cammed small block with huge head studs on it to handle a gigantic shot of nitrous. No finnicky turbahs / superchargers for this application, just a healthy shot of the juice and a stout engine. I'm honestly not sure how much I could do with $50k in this application, because I'm not familiar with pricing or modding large V8s... but I think that's pretty realistic.

If I decided on an import platform, I would buy an AWD turbo Talon or a variant of that platform, again strip it out, bulletproof tranny with custom straight cut rock crusher gears / dogbox, forged internals and upgraded crankshaft, bigger head studs, meth injection with a gigantic turbah and maybe a small shot of nitrous to get it spooling.

ROAD COURSE
Staying true to my Suby roots, I decided to pick an STi platform, even though there are definitely cheaper routes you could go. This is due largely in part to the guy who tuned my STi's videos of his STi on the track completely demolishing everything on a time attack circuit. So, 2004 STi with bigger front and rear sways to eliminate the dreaded understeer on the stock cars. Full coilovers and R compound tires. 20G turbo, 800cc+ injectors, intake / catless exhaust, upgraded radiator and Tstat, Walbro 255 pump, FMIC, meth injection, standalone engine management, stock block. Stock rotors, stock calipers, stock brake lines, upgraded pads for the track. Stripped interior except for front two seats, maybe a cage. I think that all would be achievable if you were budget shopping. That car would RIP in the twisties and the straightaways!!

What are your choices???

For strip
I'd say a early 70's Nova or 60's Camaro with a 572 inch big block with a large nitrous shot. Th 400 tranny with trans brake, 3500 stall and 4.88 gears ought to get it done.
For road course
I'd say a zo6 with some healty suspension mods and a built Ls1

Drag: Pontiac GTO The Judge, with all forged internals, a huge ass cam, and the biggest shot of nitrous I could get into it. Maybe throw in a Winters Quick change rear end just for kicks.

Road course: Some sort of late model Mustang.

Dirt circle track, Ford Fusion late model with at least a 408 Ford gas engine, Rocket Chassis, penske shocks....or a Toyota Camry late model, same chassis, but build the engine bigger, just for the hell of it.

Drag - Caravan with the woodgrain sides...in baby blue - 2.5 DOHC Turbo w/ A-413 automatic (RMVB, LSD, completely built) Megasquirted with a huge turbo, FMIC, all that business. And a total weight reduction of course... Smile

The big blocks wouldn't see it coming!

Road course - Early GTS-R Viper...need I say more?

Oooo, great idea for a thread.

I guess I could say a F50 or GT3 Cup car etc, but in reality I'd have to go with the trusty ol' Poopra (like you couldn't see that coming), mostly because it is an attainable dream someday. I'd love to have a RR/auto-x MKIV one day, mostly because they certainly have the potential to be killer track cars, but rarely are they seen in this light. However, there are guys out there like Leh Keen and Greg Caloudas, the Kozeluh twins of Twins Turbo, Andi Baritchi, Steve Arslanian, Stu Hagen, Terry Robuck, Brian McGaha and Ken Rafferty among many others who road race/auto-x their MKIV's, often to great success.

My ideal setup would have as much tire as possible, probably 17" CCW's and 315's on the rear, perhaps 18" to fit Stoptechs or the like. JIC coilovers or Motons, Titan sways, stock exterior w/ stock wing and custom brake ducting, Euro hood scoop, Sparco seats and a 6 point cage w/ harnesses. Most track cars run 61-67mm singles...I'd take the PTE67/.68 which is quick spooling yet 650+whp capable. It'd be a quick spooling, balanced and suitably modified example...no massive turbo or 19 inch wheels here.

And now, time for the gratuitous track shots....

The GSC Motorsports, Leh Keen (GT3 Cup/Le Mans driver) driven '94 Supra that competed at this years One Lap...3rd overall and 1st in class. Not a bad effort for an older car in a field of new Vipers, Vettes, and Porsches!

My ideal track car would be run that doesn't get me killed. A F1 car is definitely one of those.

With enough persuasion, I think I could get a C6 ZO6 to not do that or anyone of those Formula Ford, Formula Atlantic wings and things.

The word "budget" has no place in a dream track car discussion, so it should be ignored. Of course, completely ignoring it will just result in a bunch of pictures of F1 cars and the audi R10. So, by mildly stretching that budget...
