So I have this 2004 STi that you may or may not have heard about and the old owner sold the sub and amp out of the back of it. Most of you know I could care less abou sound but I'm pretty sure the wires are still back there plus the in car computer means that I could store my entire mp3 collection and never change a cd again which is why I'm wondering what kind of sub and amp I should get, if I get some of that action.
Nothing crazy pricey or crazy cheap, just stuff that will play music.

I'd recommend a similar setup to what I had, but I would get a better head unit for the system. The previous owner before me put that Sony one in there because you could change its color to match the dash. It's not that great though... it doesn't give you much audio control. A small stealth box like the one EvoAuto sells on NASIOC is pretty good, an Alpine or better head unit, something small like an Alpine Type R and a 600W or so amp would bang pretty hard.
It depends on how much bass you want. If you plan on tracking the car like you've told me, I'd try to keep the weight as low as possible... which would mean no heavy subs. The speakers in there now are pretty solid, there just isn't much bass =) All the speaker wires are still there if you want to get it hooked up!
Even something smaller like an 8" sub would sound good, or you could possibly look into the factory Subaru under-seat subwoofer. People used to talk a lot of shit about it, but I swear it sounded really good in my old WRX man. It was plenty of bass without getting crazy.

Go with Alpine if you are a Baller, MTX if you are not. I have the high dollar MTX stuff in my Minivan. 10X2 subs in a sledgehammer box, 5500 series. I'm running them at 2ohms and they SLAM with the MTX Elite 601D monoblock amp. If you need more space and have less money the MTX X-thunder stuff is great and you could do the 300X1 monoblock and a X-thunder 5500series single 10 box. That would be pretty good in a smaller car, but the seat will eat up a lot of sound. Stay away from 12s unless you want sustaining bass and want to buy a larger amp. I like punchy bass so I stick with 10s in a ported box any day.

Kicker L7's are where it's at. One 10 would do everything you need and more.

L7's are really power hungry and expensive, and for all that their output is rather low. Call them the Dick Cheney of subwoofers. You can get dual 5500 MTX tens for the same price you would pay for one L7 ten, and the duals will be louder.

FWIW, i've also got the 04 STi and i have 1 x 10" JL sub powered by a bridged 2x200W infinity amp. i dont know what kind of music you listen to travis, but thats plenty of bass for my non-rap music selection. i also have an alpine head unit which i really like, as well as alpine components up front and alpine speakers in the rear doors.
my friend has a forrester XT with the subaru sub under the passenger seat and it sounds good and isnt too intrusive.

i like my audiobahn 10 in bass tube. It has plenty of bass for what i listen to and is really really easy to remove when i do an autoX. I think you would like that since youll be dragging the car and will want something you can remove easily.

i'm actually planning on getting the Kicker CompVR 12" 4ohm dual coil in a ported sub wired in parallel with a RockfordFosgate bridged 400watt amp at 2ohm. it should bump and it should cost me $250 total.

So if I'm feeling lazy and just want to roll in somewhere and have someone else do the work where are we thinking about? Crutchfield? DJ where you t when I need an audio install? Wires scare me.

You won't get that full 400w with a 4ohm sub...it will be more like 200.

Where are you living these days? Cali or something crazy? I'll do it for you if you want, might be able to get you a good deal on some hardware.

I didn't read enough to see DVC. The only problem you may have is most CompVR subs are dual 2ohm coils, so your choices are 4 or 1. I'm not sure they even make a dual 4ohm CVR.

I've got a MTX Thunder 3000 (haha, that's so funny I remember those details) 10' sub in a box, and...Kenwood...I want to say 628 (?) amp, that are yours if you want them. They aren't the biggest baddest out there, but for my old celica they were more than sufficient. Set up is easy - no need to bring Crutchfield into it.
