Finally - Dragon - 08-20-2007

Sat we were bored at the house and decided to cook out on the deck. After a few beers and burgers we realized my buddy had left his mini dirtbike at our place. Of course stupidity ensued. Most importantly we got Evan on something with two wheels.

After burning his leg on the exhaust and "crashing" he decided to go for pants and the helmet.

Big. Gay. Squid.

- white_2kgt - 08-20-2007

Looks pretty much like him in the miata.

- Evan - 08-20-2007

It was fun!

I didnt need that flesh on my leg anyway.

- Ginger - 08-20-2007

Wow - I saw the first pic and thought maybe somebody prodded Evan into actually buying one. Close enough for now, though.

Take it off any sweet jumps?

- Apoc - 08-20-2007

msfgearinsurance?

Cover the brake not the clutch squid!

- Evan - 08-20-2007

slid the shit out of it.

brakes didnt work anyway

? Srsly? Don't cover the brake. It only encourages stabbing the brake in "oh shit" moments.

- Apoc - 08-20-2007

I don't cover the brake... but they do try to drill that into your head in MSF.

I disagree that it encourages it though. I'd think it'd be a lot easier to grab too much if you're not already there though.

Not covering it isnt going to prevent a new rider from grabbing a fistfull when something triggers the 'oh shit' reaction.

It will help you get on it faster - I cover both brakes when going through traffic.

+1

If they're going to hit the lever too hard they'll do it either way.

If they're gonna grab a fistful, you're right, they're going to grab a fistful. But if they've got their hands on the brakes they're going to tap them constantly to make small modifications to their speeds at times when they shouldn't (like turning).

Why cant you use the brake while turning?

works fine for me... trail the brakes going into the corner, and use the rear to adjust speed mid corner.

You understand there's a fundamental difference between trailing into the corner and tapping the brakes mid turn, right?

Yes, there is. But a blanket statement of "dont use the brakes while turning" isnt a great one to follow.

Good thing I said:

"But if they've got their hands on the brakes they're going to tap them constantly to make small modifications to their speeds at times when they shouldn't (like turning)."

And not "don't use the brakes while turning."

- Apoc - 08-20-2007

You also said not to cover at all... which we still disagree with.

How about...

"Evan, cover the brake because if you're going to grab it you're gonna do it regardless but don't when you're turning because you're going to tap them constantly."

- Ginger - 08-20-2007

Apoc Wrote:when you're turning because you're going to tap them constantly."

Maybe I'm not the norm, maybe nobody here is, but did anybody here actually do this when they started riding?

- Apoc - 08-20-2007

No... but I just figured he was talking more about bad habits on track.

(read: keith code talking about people's propensity to panic brake in corners making things worse)

- Ginger - 08-20-2007

Fair enough, I hadn't thought of this being an on track discussion.
