Learn me on bolts - Mike - 08-18-2007

I need to secure my harnesses and passenger seat. I know, I should be getting some high quality shit from McMaster, but I'm pressed for time and I don't know what sizes I needed so I ended up picking a bunch of stuff up from Home Depot... I know, I know, I'm bad.

Anyway, the stuff that RJ hooked me up with for my other seat don't have any special markings leading me to believe they're any special quality. I think people say you want Grade 8 stuff? The stuff I had and the stuff I got all have 8s on the back of them... I'm thinking that might be what that means?

Anyway, my real question is in the Grade 8 bin they had some bolts that were silver and identical ones in gold. What is the difference there?

Final question... Anyone happen to have any small square backing plates for me to mount my 2nd harness with? Or know where I can get some made for cheap? Just need some steel squares with holes in the center.

OG racing has those backing plates and CDOC has OMP backing plates with nuts welded on to them. those are what i'm using to secure my sub belts

word, i'll hit og this week. i ned to pick up some brake fluid anyway.

Hardware store grade 8 is trash, quality is inconsistent, you need to get some Aircraft grade bolts here's one place you can call up and tell them the size you need and they can ship you the right size for your harnesses,

Mike, I have a couple of the backing plates left over from mine. I'll bring them to Summit this weekend if you happen to need a couple extra.

If its marked with an "8.8" on the back its metric - metric 8.8 is not the same as SAE grade 8... you want metric 10.8 - order it from mcmaster. Hardware store stuff is junk.

Metric 8.8 is ~SAE 5, still junk.

these all say 8.8. anyone know the difference between the gold and silver shit?

chris, i'll need plates before then so i'm just gonna hit OG, but thanks.

Gold and silver are just coatings (zinc dichromate - gold, zinc - silver)

- Mike - 08-19-2007

what's the diff? just color? Tongue

- Chris - 08-19-2007

I think the coatings might help keep the bolts from rusting (or at least a protectant from weather abuse) and are used in various outdoor applications. I might be way off though.
